Black Lightning S01E13 "Shadow of Death: The Book of War" Recap

Gambi advises Jennifer that Tobias has the ability to see the worst in people and bring it out, which is something he did to Khalil when convincing him to get the spinal implant to walk again but has now been turned into a weapon. Tobias also rescued Syonide from an orphanage and trained her to be an assassin, eventually implanting a body armour under her skin.

Martin Proctor learns that many of the pod occupants are in an unstable condition and the only way to save them would be to find the correct metahuman DNA sample capable of stabilizing them. He also learns that Lala is the only lead they currently have to try to find Tobias. He sees the metahumans as bioweapons that need to be collected to arm themselves.

Tobias informs Lala that he was the one that spent the money to revive Lala with a control mechanism installed. The visions Lala has been having is a side effect of the procedure that causes him to be haunted by those he has killed. Tobias installs a bomb in him to be sent to the A.S.A. but Proctor figures out he has been armed with a bomb and gets out in time for Lala to only kill a few other agents.

Jefferson is near death and is having visions of speaking with his late father Alvin, who gives him a pep talk that coaxes him into waking up. However, they come to discover that Jefferson's powers are gone. Proctor sends agents to capture the family which Inspector Henderson hears about and sends police to go after.

Jennifer is able to generate enough electricity to restore Black Lightning's powers which is just in time to help the family fend off the impending arrival of the A.S.A. agents and the police that are also on the way. Bambi advises the family to go into hiding since they will never not be a target but they all agree that the right thing to do is to stay, fight, and protect their community. They are able to fight off the men that attack their cabin in the woods with little to no injuries. They manage to escape in a van just as the police arrive.

Once Tobias's men attack the A.S.A. headquarters, only Proctor is able to escape. The Pierce family confronts Martin and Gambi has the realization that Proctor is running a rogue operation. Gambi proceeds to kill Proctor as the culmination of making amends for the work he did with the A.S.A.

Despite Lynn's best efforts to save the kids in the pods, they don't survive. However, she is able to expose details of the A.S.A. experiments to the media which triggers a massive scandal for the government. Public opinion is once again in favour of Black Lightning and now Thunder, as they're revered as heroes for having stopped this rogue government conspiracy.

Secretly, Tobias has retrieved Martin Proctor's severed thumbs and uses them to open Proctor's briefcase. This provides Tobias with the means to take out Black Lightning once and for all.

Black Lightning will return to the CW for season 2.

Black Lightning S01E12 "The Resurrection and the Light: The Book of Pain" Recap

Tobias meets with Martin Proctor, who informs him that he must take over Lady Eve's operations and bring him Black Lightning alive.

Jefferson and Lynn resume their relationship but she tells him she wants to keep it a secret from the girls until they can be sure that they are really back together for the long-term.

Khalil resurfaces with a new spinal implant that allows him to walk again. He also has a new attitude and a fair amount of resentment against Jefferson. Jefferson brings this news to Gambi. This type of technology is billion-dollar calibre and it's clear that this is another experiment being run on poor black children. Gambi tracks down a weapon maker whom he threatens in order to get information on Martin Proctor while Jefferson warns Jennifer not to go near Khalil because he is potentially dangerous. But when she gets a text from Khalil she sneaks out in the hopes of meeting him.

Jefferson and Lynn get into an argument when he finds out she is trying to isolate Jennifer's meta-gene and that in doing so she could potentially try to get rid of her powers. Jennifer meets with Khalil who apologises for how things soured between them and shows her his spinal implant. He says that his new dreads are a result of some pills he was given to help with the regeneration which made his hair grow fast. Khalil gets angry when Jennifer begins to ask questions about how he was chosen to get the implant and blames her father for getting in her head. She is further shocked when he leaves by jumping off the second-story roof with ease. Khalil meets with Tobias who tells him to threaten Jefferson High in order to lure Black Lightning out. He is indebted to Tobias; he was able to regain his ability to walk in exchange for unconditional loyalty.

The weapon maker retrieves the information Gambi is after but Lala kills him, though he is shown to be acting strange upon hearing the phrase "The devil deals the cards."

Khalil attacks the school as Painkiller and uses paralysis needles based from a toxin his implant now creates to knock out various students. Black Lightning and Thunder emerge since Khalil refuses to stop even after Jennifer tries to get him to stop. Despite Jefferson commanding her to leave, she still follows after them. Thunder fights against Syonide and manages to get in a cut under Syonide's left arm under her internal body armour.

Tobias has a special material on for a protective undersuit that forces Jefferson to fight him in hand-to-hand combat. Eventually, Tobias and Painkiller are able to team up to taken him down as Tobias restrains him and Painkiller unleashes a strike that causes Black Lightning's heart. Tobias reprimands Khalil for that action since they're supposed to bring Black Lightning in alive. Thunder appears and Syonide begins shooting so she, Tobias, and Painkiller can escape. Jennifer is able to summon enough electricity to restart Jefferson's heart and they all escape back to meet Gambi and Lynn at a remote cabin in the North Freeland woods which Gambi has cloaked to keep any of them from being tracked.

Martin Proctor demands that Kara Fowdy find Black Lightning once and for all, even if she has to burn Freeland to do it, and says that Thunder can be killer or not in the process as she's entirely expendable to their endgame.

Lala is brought in by Syonide to meet Tobias, who seems unsurprised that Lala has been resurrected. Tobias uses the phrase "The devil deals the cards" in order to control Lala and declares that Martin Proctor is their next target to be taken out.

Black Lightning airs on Tuesdays on the CW at 9/8c.

Black Lightning S01E11 "Black Jesus: the Book of Crucifixion" Recap

Black Lightning and Thunder raid another location in the hopes of finding the bodies of the missing children. They are working with Gambi again, who is still on the mend and trying to make amends for his past wrongs.

Vice-Principal Kara Fowdy tells a scientist to keep a careful watch over the stasis pods to keep them stable but one of the teenagers form 30 years ago still dies. Fowdy also gets Deputy Chief Cayman to orchestrate a frame job so Jefferson can get arrested for (false) possession of Greenlight. Fowdy later gets into an online chat with her bosses and is informed that there are federal agents will take Jefferson to the black site in order to test him on whether he is actually Black Lightning.

Lynn heads to the station and tries to see Jefferson but isn't permitted. She briefly encounters Inspector Henderson and implores him to find a way to get Jefferson released. Lynn heads out to try to find a lawyer that can work on Jefferson's case. Henderson acts out an interrogation with Jefferson, secretly warning him that they're being taped so they have to play out a facade. He asks him questions about his daughters being kidnapped by Lala. Their questioning is interrupted by Cayman who says that there's a transfer order from the feds claiming it's a matter of national security so they have to abide by it.

Anissa wants to break Jefferson out but Gambi reminds her that if he wanted to be broken out he is more than capable of doing that himself with his own powers. They must find a way to fool the ASA into thinking Jefferson isn't Black Lightning. Gambi works together with Thunder to run an operation in which Thunder will chase after a remote-controlled car that Gambi is operating alongside a hologram of Black Lightning to make the conspirators believe that Black Lightning is still free and out in the city. After seeing the story of Black Lightning seemingly running around the city, Fowdy requests that Jefferson be released but her boss refuses to give her permission to do anything else but monitor and facilitate.

Henderson is able to use his investigation into the corruption in his department to get one of the officers arrested. He also gets the officer to rat out the others. This allows Henderson to get Jefferson released and Cayman arrested for his many corruptions. Jefferson is fully exonerated from his charges and Henderson is sworn in as the new Deputy Chief of Police. Later, Gambi is invited to join the Pierce family for dinner to celebrate Jefferson's return to freedom.

Black Lightning airs on Tuesdays on the CW at 9/8c.

Black Lightning S01E10 "Sins of the Father: The Book of Redemption" Recap

Thunder investigates Peter Gambi's lead about the gifted children going missing 30 years and discovers that they appear to still be alive in a suspended state in a warehouse. She wants to get them out but is worried that smashing up the machinery may do more harm than good so she brings what she has learned to Jefferson, asking him to help save them.

Lala begins having visions of Will, whom he previously killed but now appears as a tattoo on his chest. He intends to take over The 100 and orders the minions of the group to start selling regular drugs again. He intends to kill Tobias Whale if and when he ever comes back. Lala also violently assaults and kills some of the men that dare to defy him.

Black Lightning and Thunder return to the warehouse and discover that the kids have been moved and none of the equipment is left. They are attacked by some ASA agents but manage to fight them off. After they get away, they talk about the ASA and how Gambi was an agent of theirs until he forced them to stop. Anissa thinks they should start working together again but Jefferson insists that he can't trust him.

Two Bits visits Jefferson and tells him how he saw one of Jefferson's students kidnapped right after she displayed some sort of powered ability. She was also on Green Light so the police aren't investigating her disappearance, though her friend is looking for her and even brings fliers about her to Gambi, asking to put them up.

Anissa and Jennifer argue about powers once more because Anissa thinks she should learn about what she can do with her powers but Jennifer wants to pretend they don't exist. The argument escalates until Jennifer's entire body flares up in electricity. Anissa believes that Jennifer's powers are like Jefferson's.

Lynn also encourages Jefferson to start working with Gambi again since they need all the help they can get in this battle but Jefferson still refuses to do so. Lynn determines that Jennifer's ability differs from Jefferson's abilities in that while Jefferson can manipulate electricity, Jennifer can generate it.

Martin Proctor and the ASA kidnap and torture Gambi in the hopes of finding out who Black Lightning is, believing that Gambi was the one to tell Black Lightning about the warehouse of kids. When the initial torture tactics don't work, Martin orders two ASA agents to kidnap Jefferson since they know Gambi had helped to raise him after leaving the ASA even though Jefferson's father had been the one to investigate the ASA.

Jefferson is at the school mentoring a young boy inhale hopes of giving him a better future than a life of crime on the street. Two ASA agents arrive and take Jefferson away after he leaves the boy with an assignment to read some poems from a book by Langston Hughes, with the intent that they will discuss the poems next Saturday. They bring Jefferson to the warehouse where a badly wounded Gambi is lying on the floor. Gambi is able to kill the ASA agents once Jefferson causes an electrical surge that keeps them from being seen.

Jefferson brings Gambi back to his basement base where he can heal from his injuries while the Pierce family decides to hide out in Alvin's old house. Gambi tells Jefferson he needs to find the new ASA spotter in the community that identifies the kids that have gained powers from Green Lightning.

Martin is at the new base that holds the stasis pods holding the powered kids. He is able to deduce that Jefferson is Black Lightning and informs Vice-Principal Fowdy, who is revealed to be the new ASA spotter.

Black Lightning airs on Tuesdays on the CW at 9/8c.

Black Lightning S01E09 "The Book of Little Black Lies" Recap

Jefferson calls Inspector Henderson (as Black Lightning) to remind him that he was set up for the murder of Lady Eve and that there are corrupt officers in his department that are looking the other way on important matters. Henderson says he will use some vacation days to do some private investigations into which officers are corrupt. Henderson implores him to make sure his mother and family know that he isn't corrupt if he ends up dead and framed to appear as such. Black Lightning promises to not let that happen.

Anissa tells Jennifer that she isn't going crazy and reveals her own powers to her, saying that Jennifer has likely developed powers of her own. Jennifer doesn't believe what she is saying until Anissa uses her powers to lift Jennifer's entire bed off the floor. She goes on to say that their father is Black Lightning and Jennifer becomes terrified and upset that she has been lied to by her family for her whole life. Jefferson and Lynn are upset at Anissa for not consulting with them before telling Jennifer but what's done is done and they must find a way to move forward.

Jefferson and Anissa decide to start their own investigation into Green Light by following leads from Alvin's research. Anissa also learns during this time that she has her own fan page with people praising her for fighting back against corruption and the patriarchy. Meanwhile, Gambi is doing his own investigation into the electrical weapons created to frame Black Lightning for Lady Eve's death. Anissa secretly visits Gambi to make up her own mind about whether to sever ties with him the way Jefferson has. Gambi admits his wrongdoings and gifts her with a new superset he designed for her to be safer when engaging in super heroism. Now she can be Thunder. He apologises for keeping secrets and says he was only trying to keep his loved ones safe.

Jennifer is finally able to make peace with this revelation about herself and her family. After speaking with her mother she is better able to understand why they didn't tell her right away about the powers in her family and potentially in herself. However, she doesn't want to become a superhero herself, and is saddened by the loss of the relatively normal life she might've once had.

Jefferson and Anissa's investigation leads them to the drug lab where Green Light is being manufactured. They attack the lab as Black Lightning and Thunder, with Inspector Henderson helping since his investigation into corrupt cops had also lead him to lab. Henderson is able to make a few arrests before they blow up the lab. A.S.A. agents attack with weapons designed to disable Black Lightning's powers but Thunder saves him from their attacks.

When Jefferson returns home, Jennifer makes amends with him and they decide to watch a film together. Jefferson promises her that from now on, he will be honest with her.

Black Lightning airs on Tuesdays on the CW at 9/8c.

Black Lightning S01E08 "The Book of Revelations" Recap

They need to clear his name by finding Lady Eve's real killer or else he won't be able to go out in the suit since police will be trying to shoot and kill him.

Two henchmen are practicing in the club and are surprised to see Lala emerge, back from the dead.

Bambi meets with A.S.A. member Martin Proctor who is resolute on Black Lightning being taken out since he is a threat to the Freehand experiment.

Lawanda encourages Lala to embrace a course of violence and seduces him to try to direct his path.

Lynn discovers that the component in Green Lightning were present in a vaccines that was found in Alvie Piercer's locker from 30 years ago. She informs Jefferson of this and he warns her to be careful while investigating these things. Lynn brings this information to Gambi next and is forced to admit that he knows something more about what's going on and promises to talk to Jefferson about this.

Jefferson calls Henderson before hiding with Anissa to hide upon seeing that someone is drawing near. Jefferson is preparing to sneak up on the person and tells Anissa to stay put. He is drawing near when Anissa sees that there is an explosion about to go off in the weapon so she tackles her father and uses her powers to shield him from the damage. They know that the man send to check on the weapon didn't know that it was dangerous. Jefferson suspects that The 100 had listened in on his call to Henderson and sent someone they considered expendable.

Lynn breaks the news to Jefferson that he needs to talk to Gambi. When they meet, Gambi admits that  his real name is Peter Esposito and that there are things he withheld to protect Jefferson and his family from the A.S.A. who were the ones to make the vaccine and hunt down metahumans. Jefferson is furious and tells Gambi to stay away from his family.

Gambi visits Lady Eve and warns her that Tobias is supposed to be staying underground and hidden. Instead, he's strutting around like he owns the city and preparing to open his night club. Lady Eve admits that he needs to be checked but taking his out entirely would throw off a delicate ecosystem. She suggests that Toledo, Tobias' second-in-command, be killed in order to remind him to stay in his place. She promises to kill Tobias herself if he still doesn't fall in line.

Anissa learns that her father being Black Lightning was the reason why her parents split up for a while. She tries to warn David, the journalist that gave her the leads, about the impending danger but learns at his office that he died a few days prior in a hit-and-run.

Gambi dons a disguise and enters Tobias' club to kill Toledo. Tobias is outraged upon learning of his fate.

Lynn asks Gambi to make a suit for Anissa, now seeing that there won't be any stopping her from pursuing this same line of super heroism and it is better for her to be as protected as possible in the process.

Tobias visits a club and Black Lightning arrives to fight him, though not without having to fend off the henchmen too. In the confrontation, Tobias is wounded and his sister Tori is accidentally killed by one of the stray bullets flying from the henchmen. Tobias' henchmen use special electrical guns to kill Lady Eve and her minions during the fight too. After Tobias gets away, Black Lightning stays with Tori in her last moments trying to keep her breathing to no avail.

After meeting with Gambi, Jefferson proposes that Black Lightning should be the one to visit Two Bits to get more information from him.  Two Bits agrees to give him the information he needs to know and stop dealing drugs if he doesn't call the cops since doing so would get him a third strike and 30 years in prison. Jefferson gets the location of a warehouse.

The school board tries once again to expel Bernard, against Jefferson's wishes. But Jefferson has to follow the lead to the warehouse with the help of Gambi talking to him from back at the base. Meanwhile, Anissa is out at a junkyard experimenting with her newfound abilities. Anissa later meets Grace Choi at the library while reading up on genetic mutations and the two hit it off.

Jefferson is further stressed when he finds out that his youngest daughter Jennifer plans to have sex with her boyfriend. Anissa attends a party Grace has invited her to but her on-again/off-again girlfriend arrives and angrily accuses her of cheating. The pair end up breaking up for good, leaving Anissa free to explore both her new abilities and the attraction she feels to Grace.

Tobias has a meeting with Lady Eve, after which he instructs one of his henchmen to attack and unleash a massacre on the peace march in exchange for Lala's place in the ranks. Black Lightning stand watching over the peace march until the gunman emerges. He is able to stop the majority of bullets from hitting the people. But Tobias is watching nearby and orders Syonide to shoot Black Lightning. The bullet instead hits Reverend Holt and goes through him into Khalil, Jennifer's boyfriend. Black Lightning needs to flee, while law enforcement arrive to handle the scene.

Jefferson heads to the hospital and sees the news reports that have mixed opinions on Black Lightning, with the peace marchers being more favourable in their opinions of him than Inspector Henderson. Back at the tailor shop, Gambi deleted evidence that would show that Black Lightning was the one responsible for the reverend and Khalil being shot. Lynn assures Anissa that she will support her, after which Jefferson and Jennifer tell them that Reverend Holt is recovering but will never walk again. Jefferson comforts his family, while observing more news stories that show that Black Lightning's actions have inspired other peace marchers.

Black Lightning S01E02 "Lawanda: The Book of Hope" Recap

Jefferson promises Lynn that he was only acting as Black Lightning again in order to save their daughters and they begin the first steps of resuming their relationship. He attempts to assure the local parents that their children will be safe but is stunned to learn that the Seahorse Motel has been re-opened and the 100 are running prostitutes out of there. He has no real answer to offer when asked why Black Lightning would re-appear just to save his daughters when there are numerous other victims needing his help.

The 100 continue to make threats against Jefferson's daughters, as they are witnesses to the crimes of members. Jefferson visits Gambi to ask for his help in tracking down Lala by hacking the police's database. He then goes to confront Lala who refuses to back down since his daughters have been talking to the police. Lala recommends that he send his daughters on a long vacation or else they will do it.

He makes an impassioned speech to Lynn about how he could've saved her and even now can save so many. He's not cut out to be 'normal' like everyone else and despite Lynn's protests that he's falling into an addiction for being a hero, he insists that it's a gift and blessing from God that he intends to use. Lynn later visits Gambi to try to get him to convince Jefferson to not be Black Lightning again but he refuses to do so.

Jefferson follows a lead from Will's recovered mobile phone to raid the hotel where Lala is hiding out. He beats him up as Black Lightning before being interrupted by the arrival of police officers. Jefferson gets away and Lala is brought in for questioning. Jefferson returns home and tells Lynn that now the hotel is truly shut down and the girls will be safe. Jefferson still seems to want to keep on his hero's journey, meaning Lynn is closing herself off from him once again.

Anissa uses her powers to stop a robber while out shopping.

Tobias uses his connections to infiltrate the police station and visits Lala in his cell where he strangles him using only one hand.

Black Lightning airs on Tuesdays on the CW at 9/8c.

Black Lightning S01E01 "The Resurrection" Recap

Jefferson Pierce is a high school principal but he used to be a superhero known as Black Lightning. He picks up his older daughter Anissa after she is arrested for protesting and on the way home he is pulled over and momentarily put into handcuffs as a suspect for a crime he didn't commit due to the increasing racial tensions in his community. He has a flash of his powers, due to the anger he feels at the situation, which causes the lights in the immediate vicinity to flicker and go out before going back on.

Jefferson's youngest daughter Jennifer sneaks off to a club owned by a gang called the 100. He goes to rescue her and is forces to use his powers to knock out the lights in the process. He also shoots lightning out of his hands and unleashes it in his punches to take out various gang members. Jennifer gets away without any injuries. Police arrive at the scene and hold Jefferson at gunpoint, threatening him. His eyes begin to glow and then they attempt to taze him but he absorbs the electricity and blasts it back to knock them down. Then he shoots a large electrical blast into their cop car and leaves it on fire while the officers lay on the ground disoriented.

Jefferson has some injuries from his encounter with the police officers and his friend Gambi tries once again to persuade him to become Black Lightning again but Jefferson doesn't want to break the promise he made to his ex-wife Lynn to give up the superhero life so that they can potentially resume their relationship.

A 100 gangbanger named Will tries to attack Jennifer at the school but Anissa easily beats him down. Jefferson stops the man from drawing his gun so he decides to pay a visit to the local gang boss Lala to strike up a peace agreement. Will later returns to the school with some of his friends and abducts Jennifer and Anissa. In order to ensure their daughters' safety, Lynn approves of Jefferson being Black Lightning again since the police are not efficient enough in ensuring their safe return.

Jefferson teams up with Gambi once more to don a new superhero suit that's even better than the one he used to wear that will aid in his quest to get his daughter back. He infiltrates the Seahorse Motel and fights off the armed gang members. Though he saves his daughters, he doesn't find Lala who had been beating Will for acting impulsively and not getting his approval first. Jefferson gets to Will before he can go through with Lala's orders to make the girls disappear.

Lala is brought to Tobias Whale, the head of the 100, and non-fatally shot by a crossbow. Tobias demands that Lala kill Black Lightning, with the implication being that he himself will be killed if he fails.

Jefferson brings his daughters home where Lynn tearfully embraces them. The trauma of the experience triggers Anissa's own superpowers. She later discovers them when she breaks a sink in half after waking from a nightmare.

Black Lightning airs on Tuesdays on the CW at 9/8c.
