Kieren's dad has Kieren locked up in his room. He still wants Kieren to sign the confession and think it would be best for him to go back to the treatment centre. He also doesn't want him to talk to Amy or Simon, saying they're bad influences.

Amy wants to keep her body's changes secret and Philip tries to reassure her that everything will be okay. He agrees to keep things under wrap. Despite being afraid of being turned into a lab rat, she's also excited at being able to feel physical sensations again. He says he'd love her whether she was Undead or human.

Gary meets with Maxine. He wants to go after Simon but she tells him he's not a threat and to leave him alone. He says that Simon needs to be stopped and she orders him to go home.

Some mysterious people come to Roarton looking for Amy and ask about her whereabouts at the treatment centre. The doctor refuses to give up her address.

Gary comes storming into Kieren's home. He ties him up and questions him about Simon, wanting to know where he is and what he's planning. Kieren genuinely has no idea what Simon is up to but Gary doesn't believe him. Gary goes tearing Kieren's room apart and finds the bottle of Blue Oblivion he had taken from Simon's place. He drags Kieren out to his truck telling him if he wants to go rabid, then he'll go rabid. Simon watches the scene unfold from afar.

Amy and Philip go into town to enjoy the local festival. Kieren's mother is there and Philip's mother tells her how sorry she is to hear about the injustice Kieren is facing. Sad when someone else is defending Kieren more than his own mother. Philip's mother spots Amy with Philip and the fact that she takes a bite from a toffee apple. When she asks Amy if she's alright, having eaten, Amy feigns having forgotten that she doesn't eat and excuses herself to be sick. She tells Philip that he's done good by being with Amy and it's so heart-warming to finally see someone who isn't completely overrun by hate speak.

There's a parade consisting of Jem, Maxine, and other extremists. They're marching to a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the newly completed perimeter fence. MAxine even appoints Jem to lead it since Gary is MIA. But when they arrive at the cemetery, the blonde PDS sufferer and the rest of Simon's followers are chanting with bottle of Blue Oblivion in their hands, refusing to leave. Also, Gary has driven Kieren out to the woods near the cemetery and shoves the Blue Oblivion pill up his nose, after which Kieren takes off running. Despite his efforts to fight it, he turns full Rotter and comes across Jem and the others. She holds a gun to him but their father steps in, finally standing up for his son. He says no one is going to hurt his son and tells Kieren that he can fight this, that he's sorry and that he loves him no matter what he is. He refuses to let anyone take away his son and Kieren is indeed fighting it off.

Simon is walking towards the cemetery and Gary comes up from behind him with a knife to his throat. He breaks free and goes running towards Kieren and there is a gunshot. Maxine has also spent the last chunk of the episode over her brother's grave and pleads with him to wake up. As it turns out, some awful woman had shot at Kieren but Simon jumped in front of him. He looks at Kieren with all the love in his being and tells him he's all right. Kieren asks if he hurt anyone and he says he didn't. The blonde is yelling out to Simon about the Second Rising and he tells him it's not going to happen.

Amy is with Philip in the cemetery and she's gained a bit of colour to her complexion. She gleefully tells Philip that she can feel her heart beating and he reaches out to feel it. Maxine comes from out of nowhere, believing Amy to be the First Risen and stabs her with a pair of scissors.

Simon and Kieren go to the clinic to make sure Kieren is okay. Simon tells Kieren he's never seen anyone fight off Blue Oblivion before and Kieren brushes off the compliment, saying he's just someone who didn't want to hurt anyone anymore. He says he's not a messiah or someone with mystical powers. It's then that Philip comes charging in with Amy in his arms, begging for someone to help.

At the festival, Maxine walks on stage and says that her brother died at a young age in an accident and that with the Second Rising, he and everyone who was pure could come back. She says she already "took care of the girl" but nothing happened so she suggests they wipe out all PDS sufferers in Roarton. She tries to make a move on Sandra's mother-in-law but Dean comes up from behind and tases her. The tides have turned and no one in Roarton will be following Maxine anymore.

It's too late for Amy. She dies and the doctor mentions that her heart was indeed beating before she died. Kieren shares a moment with Jem as they prepare to attend Amy's funeral. He tells Jem to wear something flowery and fun because that's what Amy would have wanted. Jem says she's not sure if it would be proper for her to go after all the bad she has done but Kieren assures her that she is a VIP-attendee. Kieren adds that Gary isn't invited and Jem replies that she has broken up with him. It's Kieren's word against Gary's and she has chosen Kieren's. They attend the funeral together wearing flower corsages to honour Amy.

Kieren heads to the after-party and performs his duties as her best friend by thanking everyone for coming to mourn her. The other followers are at a pub and discuss the fact that Simon has been labelled a traitor and that the First Risen is still out there. Kieren is in Jem's room and finds the bracelet Henry made for her. He asks where she got it and she lies by saying Gary made it for her. He tells her that's a lie and that Henry made it for her and had showed it to him the night he disappeared. She breaks down in tears, realising Gary's lie and also being unable to take the guilt any longer. She confesses to Kieren about the circumstances that led to her accidentally killing Henry. He asks what she wants to do and she says she needs help. He hugs and comforts her, promising they'll get her some help then.

Simon asks Kieren to run away with him but Kieren says he's finally okay with being where he is and Simon accepts that. Kieren's father comes over to thank Kieren for saving his life and shakes his hand. Kieren's mother comes over and asks if he has a place to stay and he says he's still staying at Amy's place. She says she hopes he's not going away and he says he's staying put. Indeed, all seems well with the exception of Amy being dead.

Philip is still sitting at Amy's grave, having been sat there all night. He is about to walk away when he thinks he hears a sound but finds nothing. After he leaves, the two people who had been looking for Amy earlier head to her grave. One asks the other if there's still time and the other person says there is. They put on biohazard suits, bag the teddy bear Philip left atop her grave and then begin digging it up.

Simon meets another Undead Prophet follower in a hotel room. The follower brings a video message from the messiah that tells him he must sacrifice the First Risen in order for the Second Rising to occur. The follower leaves Simon with a large pouch full of weapons. Simon is shaken up by this new order and freaks out about it after the other follower leaves.

His breakdown transition into flashbacks of his being at the Treatment Centre and having multiple tests run on him. Eventually, the doctors find that the medication is working well on him. He was the first to respond to their chemical compound and he is becoming more like a human. He agrees to let them continue their experiments in the hope of further developing a cure. He also says he doesn't want his family to see him like that before he is fixed.

Kieren's father is having difficulty dealing with Kieren's recent admissions regarding his time before he was medicated. His family also struggles with Kieren's decision to no longer wear his mousse and makeup. They struggle to even look at him. He's then arrested for the crime of breaking into the Treatment Centre (which was actually done by the blonde girl who wanted to impress Simon). He and Simon are being blamed for the crime. Kieren is threatened that he'll be sent back to the Norfolk Treatment Centre if he doesn't (falsely) confess. They plan to do the same to Simon once they find him. Kieren doesn't care about their threats and refuses to comply.

Continuing on with Simon's flashbacks, we see Simon meet another PDS sufferer, the same man who brought him the weapons in the hotel room. He starts talking about the Undead Prophet and all his teachings. Simon is full of self-loathing by his condition at that point in his life.

Kieren's dad tries to get Kieren to sign a written confession. Kieren's mother doesn't strongly side with him or Kieren and it's clear that this family is falling to pieces.

Amy worries that she may be dying. She takes Philip out for a cute little mini-golf date.

The Undead Prophet follower from the top of the episode had set his bag down in the hotel lobby briefly, during which Gary managed to steal the video message and a notebook. He shows it to Maxine who knows that the clock is truly ticking to get to the First Risen.

Flashback-Simon has to see his father and he's not happy about it, having wanted to be cured completely before doing so. Their relationship is on bad terms because Simon's father can barely look at him. Simon had killed his mother while rabid. Simon continues to be tested and experimented on until he is released. His father reluctantly brings him home but eventually kicks him out because he's unable to get over the fact that Simon killed his mother.

Kieren sneaks out and goes to Simon's place. He meets Amy there and apologises, but she's not mad. She tells him to take care and it's evident she's saying goodbye because she believes she's not long for this world. Kieren goes snooping around Simon's room and finds Blue Oblivion, which he pockets before returning home. He gets into an argument with his parents about sneaking out and there's far more tension due to his parents no longer "recognising him."

Amy has gone and set up a tent and calls Philip to join her. She worries that she is turning rabid, due to the fact that she isn't responding to the treatments. She asks Philip if he ever killed anyone during the rising and he says he's never killed anyone. She pulls out a pair of handcuffs and asks him to put them on her, which he does. She doesn't want to go around as a rabid, saying it's no way to live. She has brought a screwdriver and wants Philip to save her from a "fate worse than death."

Maxine goes downstairs to watch a show with the family she is staying with. Grandma gets sassy with Sandra and then Sandra says she should have killed her mother-in-law when she saw her rise. Maxine is amazed to learn that she saw the rising. Maxine brings her up to her room and asks her to identify the First Risen. She points to a photo, but we're left to wonder if it was in fact Kieren she pointed at.

Amy is telling Philip to kill her but then she stops him when she begins to feel, yes feel, the rain on her face. She realises that she's not turning rabid. She says she doesn't know what's going on but it would seem that she is turning more human!

Finally, flashback-Simon is shown to be wandering the streets before calling the man he had met in the Treatment Centre. He meets him at an abandoned apartment building, where he is welcomed by a large group of PDS suffering Undead Prophet followers. This explains why he feels such a strong sense of loyalty to the group; they were his family when he had none.

Philip has a naughty dream about Amy but is interrupted by his mum. He's still very much swept up in this fantasy and it leads to him being caught up on tape visiting the Undead brothel.

Amy's health is deteriorating. Simon is rallying other Undeads into walking around without makeup or contacts on, promoting self-acceptance. Henry's mother is still upset because her son is missing and she's convinced Maxine is spreading lies.

Philip is reprimanded by Maxine for missing the meeting (he had taken a post-coital nap and overslept). She tells him to deal with Henry's mother and convince him that Henry has been spotted at an extremist camp. She doesn't want Henry's mother interfering with her plans by sending the town into a tizzy over Henry. Maxine has seen the footage of Philip at the Undead brothel and if he doesn't do as she asks, she will reveal his secret.

Gary and Jem have gotten involved with one another and go on patrol together. Jem has a vision of Henry in the woods; she's clearly still traumatised and guilt-ridden.

Amy is seeking treatment for her symptoms. She returns home and spots Kieren and Simon kissing. She doesn't confront them, or even get angry. Instead, she looks devastated. Kieren and Simon are on their way to Kieren's house. Kieren invited him to come and see his world, but asked that Simon mousse up for the comfort of his parents.

Some of Simon's followers went to a treatment centre wielding cans of spray paint and they also free the Rotters from their cages.

The family get-together is going well until Jem comes home with Gary. It doesn't take long for Gary to launch into gruesome stories about hunting and killing Rotters. Even Jem looks uncomfortable, sending Kieren a sympathetic look. Kieren retaliates by sharing his stories about ripping people apart after he rose, saying that if they had to listen to Gary's stories, then he can listen to his. He then shares his rising story, something he's never done before. Kieren's parents are uncomfortable with the awkwardness but Jem seems intrigued. Kieren says that no one else was around when he rose. It's a minor detail in the point he's trying to make but Gary interrupts for clarification, and you can see the recognition dawn on his face. Kieren's father gets angry, telling Kieren to stop, and Kieren tells him off for allowing Gary and Jem to share their stories while he gets told off for finally speaking up.

Maxine rallies a protest in front of the Undead brothel. Gary and Jem are tasked with rounding up the workers from inside along with their customers. Everyone is brought outside on the front lawn where the protesters begin verbally abusing them. Philip arrives and steals the megaphone, telling them all off for pointing fingers at them. He says that none of them are pure or free of sin and that they're just using the PDS sufferers to make themselves feel better. The protesters boo him and he goes to stand with the workers and customers. Amy witnesses the whole thing.

Kieren sits quietly, removing his contacts and beginning to wipe off his mousse. He then goes over to Simon and begins wiping the mousse from his face as well.

Amy gets "drunk" (but not really), likely self-medicating following her not-yet official makeup. She runs into Philip at a bus stop where he is also having a drink. They chat about the recent events and Philip outright admits his feelings for Amy. They end up in bed together again.

Maxine is shown to e standing over her son's grave, telling him it won't be long now. Finally, we've gotten a reason for her interest in a Second Rising.

Simon goes to a phone booth in the middle of the night, calling someone and telling them he's found the First Risen and that he's beautiful.

In this episode, we're introduced to Freddie, who is living with his ex-wife Haley and her new husband Amir. Things are complicated, as Freddie is undead and a three-way relationship isn't exactly what Amir had in mind when marrying his lady love. Freddie is also friends with new character Zoe, who is also undead. Freddie wants a normal life back and spends much of the episode trying to get his life and wife back. He asks her to run away with him but she has matured and is now looking to build her way up in her career and turns him down.

Kieren tells Simon off for leading Amy on but Simon tells him that Amy is someone who needs to be loved and he does in fact love her, just not "like that." He's shown to be trying to keep Kieren in Roarton but it's unclear what his true motives are. Is he simply interested in a relationship with Kieren or are there darker reasons?

Jem goes to visit Maxine and confesses her killing Henry. Maxine drives them to the woods, wanting to see the body instead of going to the police. Maxine tells her she hasn't done anything wrong and that Henry was a killer. But when they get to the spot, Henry's body is nowhere to be found. As it turns out, Gary has disposed of the body by burning it. He's interested in Jem and even kisses her but she doesn't reciprocate his feelings. He also gives her the bracelet Henry had made, pretending like he had made it.

We also see Amy working for Phillip, an arrangement he has orchestrated. It's all very strange and complicated. He's interested in her but she's having none of it. He can see that she's not going well and turns up the heat when he sees that she is cold. His responsibilities are to the ULA, enforcing unjust anti-undead policies but his seemingly genuine affection for her further exemplifies the show's tackling grey morality.

Maxine reveals that the ULA wants the First Risen, because apparently it's somehow connected to a Second Rising. Maxine is suspicious that Kieren was the First Risen. Kieren has to take care of some rabids at the treatment centre, which proves particularly stressful.

Freddie gets Haley to come to his workshop and yet again tries to woo her. She tells him he needs to leave. They hug and say their goodbyes on good terms but then Freddie begins to go rabid, apologetically telling her that he forgot to take his neurotriptyline shot. She calls for help and Amir comes running and begins banging on the door, trying to get Haley out. Freddie gives Haley a hammer and pleads with her to take it and knock him out to protect herself. But she can't bring herself to do it.

Kieren is called by Gary, and they manage to get the door open. Haley is freed and Kieren goes in, trying to talk Freddie down. It doesn't help so Gary shoots him in the leg. Kieren administers the shot and Gary hauls Freddie away. He says that Freddie will be (unjustly) taken to a non-compliance centre.

An upset Kieren goes to see Simon. Amy is upstairs in her room. Kieren says nothing but kisses Simon.

Jem is still suffering from nightmares that show no sign of letting up.

Amy goes off to try to convince Kieren from leaving Roarton. His parents had insisted on throwing a cheesy going away French-themed party. Amy meets Kieren at the train station, where he asks her if she'd like to go with him. She chides him for putting so much mousse on and for hiding who he really is. He tries to buy a ticket but Maxine has put an Undead travel ban on Roarton. Maxine had promoted Philip and he comes to the station to tell Kieren that all PDS sufferers are required to come to the kickoff seminar event happening that day.

Henry, the Undead boy at school who has a crush on Jem, outs her as an ex-HVF war hero. It ends up impressing her peers and gets her in with the popular girls in her class.

At the seminar, a video is played that announces that PDS sufferers must now do tremendous amounts of volunteer work. Maxine has put together a 'Give Back' scheme. Kieren also learns that his passport is out of date and that he won't be able to fill out the new forms pertaining to his condition until he first completes the program. Maxine also wants to know Kieren's time of rising. Kieren tells her that he doesn't know. Kieren learns from his parents that at the very least, he'll be stuck in Roarton for another six months. His family tries to comfort him but it does little to help.

Philip's mother tells him she has created a dating profile for him and he is mortified, opting to walk out in the middle of the night. He heads to a secret club where there are Undead womyn galore for him to enjoy the company of. He ends up roleplaying with one of them, where she pretends to be Amy.

The real Amy is shown to be having some health problems and downplaying the severity of them to Simon. She had a tremendous headache and displays hand tremors.

Kieren begins his work for the 'Give Back' program and ends up bonding with Simon, who reveals scars not unlike those that Kieren had when he killed himself. He also tells Kieren that the program is a scam.

Henry and two other Undead students decide to take Blue Oblivion as a prank. When the first boy snorts his pill, the other two run out as he turns rabid. The class locks themselves in the classroom but Jem is given a giant machete and told to go out and take out the rabid because of all her stories of killing rabids. She becomes terrified and pees herself as the rabid approaches. She begins crying, pleading to be let back in and the Blue Oblivion wears off, causing the student to return back to normal. Needless to her say, all the credibility she had built up disappears. She also learns from one of the popular girls that one of the Rotters she had killed in the supermarket was her father, for which she had earned a medal.

The Undead students are forced to give Maxine the Undead Prophet website and any information on how to access it, since that was where they obtained the Blue Oblivion from.

Amy and Simon are having an Undead party, and Kieren attends, having been invited by Simon. When he arrives, nearly everyone is intoxicated, having consumed bits of sheep brain. Kieren has another heart-to-heart with Simon, who is not intoxicated, and Simon tells him how he was just like Kieren, wanting to escape. He did so by going to the States, but the novelty wore off quickly and it didn't help. Gary also reveals to Simon that he is also gay.

Jem is picked up Gary to go hunting for rabids in the woods. They also have a chat in which he assures her that she is brave and had even saved him on previous hunts. She spots a PDS suffferer from afar, and shoots and kills him. Gary catches up, and Jem is horrified to find that it is Henry.

A group of four PDS sufferers on board a train take some of that infamous blue-powder drug and become rabid and crazed before attacking those on board the train, including Ken Burton, whose wife we saw shot dead last series. Ken is killed along with several others.

Kieren is working hard at the Legion pub to save up money in order to get out of Roarton to find a life somewhere more conducive to his living without fear and hateful vitriol constantly spewed at him.

A PDS sufferer at school has a crush on Jem. She and Kieren are on much better terms now and she is no longer involved with the HVF and their activities. However, she's still having nightmares. Jem later accompanies her mother to the grocery store and begins to suffer from flashbacks of her encounter with Kieren while he was still rabid. She breathes deeply to maintain her composure but then she becomes frightened when one of the employees is shown to be a PDS sufferer not wearing his contacts because they were growing uncomfortable.

Enter Maxine Martin, the newly elected Pro-Life MP in town, who is anti-"rotter" just like the church elders. She's part of the radical pro-life party, Victus.

Amy returns to Roarton after being tasked with some secret mission and staying with some other PDS sufferers who follow the Undead Prophet. She reunited with Kieren, who is understandably thrilled to see her.

Maxine is searching through the town's records and is insistent that there are some missing. She and Vicar Odie aren't getting along very well but after she disposes of a rabid Rotter with a power drill, he invites her over for a glass of scotch. He tells her he knows why she wants to have the town records but before the two of them can reveal more details, the Vicar has a heart attack. Maxine runs inside to call for help but when she finds the town records on his desk, she grabs them and leaves him outside to die. She's then shown to be putting up headshots of the undead on the wall of her hotel room.

Kieren meets Amy's new beau, Simon, and the two clash somewhat over differing ideologies regarding their condition and how to deal with the mistreatment they receive. Simon is also like Amy, in his refusal to hide his condition using mousse and contacts. They later come to the Legion pub where Kieren is doing a shift. They're dressed up and mouse/contact-less. They're heckled by Gary and some other hateful townsfolk friends of his. Kieren's had enough and he sticks up for Amy and Simon, ordering them out. Gary tries to attack Kieren but Simon comes up from behind and begins choking him out. The pub-owner pulls out a gun, telling Simon to get off him. Kieren puts his keys to the pub on the bar and leaves with Amy and Simon. It's clear now that he needs to get out and he begins putting some of his belongings together and looking at his passport.

Steven and Sue are waiting for Kieren to come home. Steve wants to call Shirely but Sue, who thinks Kieren is simply out with Rick, warns him that if they do so, the treatment centre will be called and Kieren will be taken away.

Kieren is walking home when Rick and some HVF soldiers drive past him. The Rotters are still tied up in the back of their truck. They arrive at the Macy home and Bill goes inside. Rick gestures to her to no say anything and Bill gets what he needs before going back in the truck. Rick offers some help to his father, who in turn blows up in anger over his siding with Kieren. Bill tells him Kieren has to go and Rick must be the one to do it.

A hungover Philip wakes up following a night with Amy. He says he has an early council meeting and tells her she can't tell anyone they had sex. She doesn't want anyone to know she slept with someone like him and he leaves in anger. As he exits the front door, he encounters Shirley. They ask each other why they're there. Shirley says she knew Amy's dad and has brought some leftover belongings. Philip claims to be doing outreach. Neither believes the other but they carry on as Philip zips up his trousers and walks off.

Gary brings the bitten Dean to the quarantine compound and once he gets him inside, he locks the gate and says he's being quarantined. Dean assumes this is about his confession about loving Gary's girlfriend but Gary still walks away.

Kieren comes across the Roarton supermarket with one contact lens still missing and his mousse half off. He realises its the same one in which he killed Lisa Lancaster and finally remembers how the rest of the incident played out. Jem had come in looking for Lisa, killed the other Rotters and upon finding Kieren feasting on her body, she had prepared to shoot him.

Kieren returns home and goes upstairs past his parents who are sleeping on the couch. Kieren goes into Jem's room and she wakes up startled, pulling her gun on him. He confronts her about his newfound memories. She's still angry and asks if he's going to make excuses. He says it feels awful and doesn't believe what any of them did was alright or that killing the living didn't count. Jem asks if he thinks she's a coward and she says she's not. She says she lied to everyone, claiming she ran out of bullets, when she simply couldn't pull the trigger on her own brother. Kieren thanks her and says he's going to talk with Lisa's parents and try to bring them some peace. Jem asks him to wait so she can accompany him.

At their home, Bill is coaching Rick on how to kill Kieren and claim that he turned rabid. Janet is listening from the kitchen while Bill says that Rotters are evil, not people. Rick offers to go out and get some cigarettes for Bill and before leaving, he asks Janet for some change and leaves. When Kieren and Jem try to leave, Sue and Steve tell them they can't, as it is too dangerous out there.

Rick gets to the shop and calls the Walker house. They can hear the ringing but can't find the phone. Rick leaves a message warning Kieren he's in danger while Jem and Kieren go out the back. Rick says that if they see him or Bill coming, to simply run. He begins to talk about the previous night but then the time runs out on the phone and the line goes dead.

Bill calls the vicar and Oddie, saying he's bringing Rick in and needs them to perform an inspiring sermon. Janet comes over and tells her husband that Philip is painting something on the carriage door. Bill goes out with his shotgun and finds that Philip is painting the letters PDS. He says that the council passed a proposal that all houses with PDS sufferers must be identified. Bill fires a warning shot in the air and Philip runs off. Dean calls out from behind the gates, saying he knows how Bill feels. Rick arrives and asks what's going on. His father tells him to go inside to change and that they're going to church.

Kieren and Jem visit the Lancasters and Jem stops them from leaving for the service. The Lancasters show them fliers they've been making and Kieren confesses what he did in the supermarket. The Lancasters look relieved and ask if he was the one who moved the body. They're not angry with him, and it turns out that they've been hoping for her to return as a Rotter. Kieren tries to explain that the only ones who died before The Rising came back but Jem stops him, saying that it's possible. Kieren reluctantly agrees with her, understanding that hope is all they have left.

Dean tries to get a young boy walking boy to run to the shops to get him something to eat but the boy simply runs off with his money. He tries again with an old woman but she spits in his face.

At the church, Oddie is giving a sermon to rile everyone up against PDS sufferers. He says they're followers of the Pale Horseman, Death. Following the sermon, Bill thanks the vicar but Oddie warns him that there will be a Second Rising. When the first Risen are judged, there will be a second resurrection and God will bring back the righteous. Bill promises that it's the same Rick and leaves with his son.

Amy is listening to a web broadcast from the Undead Liberation Army and is interrupted by Gary knocking at her door to tell her he'll be painting her place with the PDS sign. She goes back to her room and resumes listening when Gary comes in and tells her she can't go around without covering up her condition with makeup. Amy tells him to get out but then he grabs her and smears lipstick sloppily on her mouth and face.

Jem and Kieren are walking home and she tells him he is braver than she is while everyone thinks she's braver than she actually is. They reach the rail station and spot Amy on the platform. Jem tells Kieren to go to her and she turns around to head home. Kieren gets closer and finds Amy wearing her mousse and contact lenses, saying she's leaving Roarton because people won't accept them for who they are. She wants to go and find the ULA commune and asks Kieren to come with her. He thinks they're dangerous and turns her down, at least for now. Amy says he's doing this because of Rick and asks if she thinks Rick and his father will change. Kieren thinks they will and Amy says he's very optimistic. The train pulls up and Kieren reminds her she needs daily injections. Amy replies that the ULA have a stockpile of what she'll need and promises to be back for their wedding, hugging him goodbye and boarding the train.

Shirley is holding a support group for mothers of PDS sufferers. One woman is horrified by the erotic fanmail her son is getting. Sue admits she's conflicted with her emotions and feelings. The other mothers agree. Sue says she's angry at Kieren for killing himself because the family fell apart because of it. Janet says she understands and then admits she is afraid of her son Rick.

Bill is teaching Rick how to use his knife to pierce Kieren's brain and kill him. Rick takes a moment alone in the bathroom and begins to wipe off his mousse. Janet is telling the support group that she's happy her handsome boy is back and that he is the same no matter what Oddie says. Rick comes out to Bill without his mousse and contacts on, saying he doesn't want to hurt Kieren and that if Kieren is evil then so is he. Bill says something is wrong and he wants to help, hugging a crying Rick and saying everything will be all right.

Dean calls out to Ken, asking for food for his diabetes. Ken takes the list of food and as he walks away, Dean apologises for what he has done. Ken pauses and then continues walking. Jem takes down the photos in her room of her killing Rotters and removes her HVR armband. Bill gets paint from the attic and paints over the PDS sign on his house. Jem removes her military jacket and unloads her revolver before taking it out to the shed. While there, she finds the family phone and hears Rick's message warning Kieren to stay away from him and Bill. She takes off running to the station to try to find Kieren but he is already gone. Kieren is standing on a railway overpass and Bill drives by, surprisingly ignoring him.

Janet comes home and asks Bill where Rick is. Bill says he hasn't seen Rick for five years since they waved him off at the airport before heading overseas. She also finds that Bill has put the shrine back up. Kieren comes home and finds Rick's corpose propped up in front of the garage door with a knife stuck in the back of his skull. Kieren cries, closing Rick's eyes and whispering "I love you" in his ear. He pulls out the knife and walks off as Jem arrives back home. She is shocked to find Rick's corpse and Ken watches the whole scene from across the street.

Janet answers the door after someone is pounding on the door and finds it is Kieren with the knife in his hand. He goes inside and tells Bill to stand up. Bill only says Kieren is barred from the house and calls him an animal when he sticks a knife in Bill's armchair. Kieren reminds him he had already banned him years ago when he had given Rick a mix CD. Bill says Kieren will still be banned when Rick comes back during the next resurrection when only the good dead will come up. He says that Rick was an impostor and he knew it as soon as he stood up for Kieren. Janet becomes distraught upon realising what Bill has done. Kieren screams that Rick's return was a gift and he ruined it. Janet cries out, grabbing the knife and slashing Bill's hands. Kieren restrains her, comforting her as Bill stares shocked at the blood on his hands, finally realising what he has done. Bill stumbles outside and is shot in the chest by Ken with a shotgun. Dean says he didn't see anything and Ken continues on down the street. Janet and Kieren come out and Kieren walks off while Janet begins calling for help.

Kieren heads to the cave where he had previously seen the Rotters and goes inside. At the Walker home, Jem assures her father that Kieren wouldn't leave them again and that he'll be back. Kieren looks at a rock where he and Rick had carved a message that they'd be together forever. He hears someone coming towards him and eventually realises it's his mother. He becomes emotional, saying he needed to be somewhere he and Rick used to go and Sue comes and sits down, assuring him he didn't get Rick killed. She says Bill is the one to blame and that says that this time he needs to stay. She says she knows how it feels to lose someone and shares that she had dated an RAF pilot with whom she had hoped to settle down with. He ended up dumping her and dating her friend whom he thought more socially acceptable. She had quit college, came home, and decided to kill herself. The chemist had refused to serve her sleeping pills and she had burst into tears. The man had got her tea and let her talk. He listened, made her laugh, and says that Kieren doesn't know that Steve can be very funny when he wants to be. She says Steve is probably having a nervous breakdown at home because he couldn't bear to come out to the cave with her.

Kieren and Sue return home and Steve says he understands. Kieren says he shouldn't let him off easy, as he didn't think of any of their feelings. He wants Steve to tell him off and Steve grounds him. Kieren asks for more and Steve grows increasingly angry, saying he was worried sick. He had gone to the cave, saw Kieren sitting inside with blood on his hands. He breaks down crying and Kieren hugs him.

Kieren and Steve serve as pallbearers at the Macys' funeral. Kieren watches as Rick's coffin is lowered into the ground and dirt is shovelled onto it.

Kieren tries to thank Jem for helping him but she insists it was for their parents and not for him before throwing him out of her room. He goes downstairs to speak with his parents, who avoid discussing last night's events. They want him to stay home for the foreseeable future for his safety. Jem comes in and asks if they're coming to the ceremony and the parents try to hush her up but she declares that it's to honour the victims of The Rising. Kieren is uncomfortable and Jem storms out.

Shirley visits Janet and Bill to brief them before they are reunited with their un-dead son Rick. She offers them the opportunity to meet with a therapist but Bill becomes angry and goes upstairs to Rick's room. He goes in, begins taking down Rick's sports awards and later takes the shrine down with Janet.

Kieren looks over a postcard Rick had sent him promising they'd be together and that he would sort things out with his (implied to be homophobic) father. Steve comes in and invites him to watch some DVDs while he gives him his injection. Immediately after, the doorbell rings and Steve hurries to hide Kieren into a closet. Kieren's flashlight goes out and he begins to have flashbacks, brought on by the injection. He remembers being in his coffin and clawing his way out. Kieren stumble out of the closet in a panic but Steve holds him and tells him it's okay and that the visitors have gone. Kieren asks why they buried him but Steve gets a call before he can answer. It's his co-worker Clive, calling him into work. He tries to stay with Kieren but Kieren insists he'll be fine and Steve agrees to leave him. Kieren then grabs a hoodie and heads out.

He passes Ken's house, where Shirley is inside counselling him. He then passes by the anniversary ceremony where the dead are being honoured. Oddie gives a speech for the HVF fighters who died while protecting Roarton. Bill and Janet arrive and the crowd applauds him. He gets up and announces that Rick is coming home and they expect everyone's full support. The crowd rumbles, knowing instantly what he is implying and Bill and Janet immediately leave.

Kieren climbs into the quarantined cemetery and visits his grave, remembering when he first climbed out of it with the others around him doing the same. When he hears a girl's voice, he attempts to hide behind his tombstone. She comes over and cheerfully says she knows him. He tries to fend her off with a metal pole but then she impales herself before laughing and declaring she is already dead. She introduces herself as Amy Dyer.

Amy shows Kieren her own tombstone and says she had prepared a very thorough will. Kieren says he had wanted to be cremated but his parents went against his wishes. Kieren attempts to leave but then Amy rightfully says that Kieren is moping over his old life. She says she used to do the same and that the way to stop doing it is to go on day trips. The duo head to a bus stop and Amy promises that things will be alright.

Bill and Janet are waiting for their son to arrive while Oddie and other townsfolk are standing around outside. The military transport pulls up and Janet and Bill head outside to greet Rick, who steps out with a slight limp and his head sewn back together. Bill hesitates before shaking his hand and Rick gives his mother a kiss.

Amy takes Kieren to a fun fair and he's anxious about there being so many people. She tells him things will be fine and adds that she's thinking of stopping using the mousse.

Bill and Rick bond while target-shooting and discuss the Rick's valour medal. Janet calls the PDS therapist but hangs up when put on hold and takes some pills instead. Sue and Jem are walking home and Jem wonders if Bill is now okay with PDS sufferers but Sue remains skeptical.  Jem wonders if they'll tell Kieren that Rick is back but Sue doesn't answer.

Amy and Kieren get on various rides and she talks about people's fear of death and how crazy it makes them. He warns her that the man in charge of the Undead Liberation Army is dangerous after she recites their mantra but she assumes that those people were simply in survival mode. Kieren has a vision of Lisa Lancaster while riding the haunted house ride.

Janet comes outside to see Bill and Rick and Rick notes how Jem was present amongst the crowd when he returned home. Bill speaks highly of her while denouncing her family, calling Kieren selfish. Rick asks what happened and Janet tries to keep it quiet but at Rick's pushing, Bill declares that Kieren killed himself because he was weak. Janet says he shouldn't speak ill of the dead and Rick fires a full flip, seemingly upset by the news.

Kieren is spotted at the fair while Amy is riding one of the rides and the man who recognises him says that he went to his funeral and calls him a Rotter. Kieren runs off into the woods and spots another PDS sufferer. He follows after them and watches and they go into a cave. He heads back to town and observes missing person fliers, including one for Lisa. He takes it down and leaves with it.

Dean and Gary visit Oddie and ask for wages to patrol the woods since it's taking so much time. The vicar is angry about this and Gary also says he assumes Bill won't be doing his shifts now that he has his family back. Oddie's clerk, Philip, says that though the budget is tight, they can manage it. The vicar stiffly states that they'll get their money and sends them off.

Sue and Jem meet Steve on the curb when he arrives home to tell him how Rick is back. Jem says they should tell him right away but her parents want to put it off as long as possible. When Kieren sneaks in, he sees them talking but can't hear the specifics of what they're discussing. He goes inside and hides the flyer before turning on the computer. His family comes inside and when Steve notices Kieren's wearing the hoodie, Kieren pretends he was cold. Steve then drags Jem with him to go turn the furnace on.

Bill brings Rick a beer and tells him he should always wear his medal and be proud of it. Bill then says he'll be heading off to the legion hall once he's checked on Janet. At the legion hall, Pearl is taking down photos of the members with HVF kills. Gary is annoyed but Pearl insists they might offend people. Philip prepares a separate section for PDS sufferers and everyone goes quiet when Bill, Rick, and Janet come in. Bill asks who's going to buy the first round for his son but no one responds.

Kieren is pretending to eat for his parent's benefit, while Jem is appalled by the whole display. She is eating in the living room instead of at the table. Steve tells her she needs to put her revolver in the shed but she refuses. The doorbell rings and after Sue answers it, she tells Kieren it's for him. He goes and finds Amy not wearing her mousse. She's not angry but does want to know why he ran off from the fair. He hurries her inside where she cheerfully greets Kieren's family. Jem storms out yet again before Kieren offers to show Amy his room. Kieren asks Amy to not talk the way she just had been because his parents don't like acting as if he is (un)dead. Amy replies that they should start getting used to it.

Jem tries to join Dean on patrol but tells her she can't come, under Bill's orders, because Kieren is in town and was spotted in town. Bill says it's a betrayal of trust and Dean says it's different than his having a Rotter for a son. Jem angrily goes back inside.

Rick is discussing military weaponry and the subject of body armour comes up, Gary asks if he was wearing body armour when he died. Rick answers that body armour doesn't protect against an IED. Philip asks if he regrets enlisting and Rick says it was the best time of his life because his unit was like family.

Amy asks Kieren how he died and when he doesn't answer, she unbottons her blouse to show him her leukemia scars. She felt it was unfair to die so young and then asks what his last thought was. Kieren says he felt relief and shows her the scars where he slit his wrists. Amy hugs him while he looks at paintings of Rick. Jem opens his bedroom and Kieren jumps back from Amy. Kieren comes down into the living room, grabs his hoodie, and furiously walks out with Amy. When Steve tries to stop him, Kieren says he knows that Rick is back.

At the legion hall, Bill brings Rick another drink and says that Gary had been making the moves on Rick's girlfriend while he was in the Army. Rick isn't bothered and drinks the whiskey, after which he goes to the bathroom and begins vomiting black bile.

Kieren arrives at the legion hall and warns Amy that he's not allowed in because the townspeople already hated him for being different before he was dead. Amy walks in with Kieren right behind her and everyone stares. The bartender demands that they order something if they want to stay and Amy orders two lemonades. Bill objects to them being served to and Philip escorts them to the Rotters section, a back hallway, and it's then that Rick comes out of the bathroom and stares in awe of Kieren. He then shakes his hand and says it's good to see him. Kieren says he can't go out in the main area because of Philip, Rick loudly objects to this, and then Philip awkwardly lets them out.

Dean is playing a video on patrol and then spots a PDS sufferer hauling dead sheep through the forest. He trips, rolls down into a stream and looks up to find a Rotter standing over him, after which he runs off screaming.

Kieren and Rick are chatting and then Gary rudely assumes that Amy is a lesbian. When Rick continues drinking, she says PDS sufferers can't drink but he stubbornly insists that he can. She makes a point of asking when his stitching is coming out and Rick says it depends. Dean then comes running in to say that he's spotted a rabid Rotter in the woods. Bill leads his men out and asks Rick to go along, warning him that the Rotter won't be a soft one like Kieren.

The men reach the woods and head out while Kieren and Rick stay in the car. Rick asks Kieren what happened and he shares how life didn't mean anything to him anymore and that he killed himself. Rick throws a fit and says he shouldn't have, as he had gotten into art school on a full scholarship and was almost out of there. Kieren says life didn't mean anything without Rick, noting how he had joined the Army and left without saying goodbye. Kieren says he wrote letters and Rick insists he didn't get any. Bill radios for Rick and tells them to get moving. Kieren tells Rick he doesn't have to do what he tells him anymore, but Rick says it is his father and heads out.

Rick has gone after Billy, Gary, and Dean but loses track of Kieren. Kieren finds the cave and calls Rick over. The two Rotters are shown to bring a dead sheep over and begin feeding a child Rotter that has just come out. Rick calls the location in, much to Kieren's objection. The two Rotters head out and when the men arrive, Dean tases the child. The adult male bites Dean before he can tase him, after which Dean dramatically prepares to shoot himself. Kieren tells him that the infection isn't spread by bite.

Bill offers Rick the opportunity to shoot them but Kieren talks him down, insisting they can be cured if taken to the hospital, adding that they are just like them. Kieren even takes out one of his contacts to emphasise his point. Kieren asks if he's going to shoot him too. Rick lowers the rifle and walks away. Bill tries to shoot but his rifle jams. Kieren tells Dean and Gary that the authorities will pay approximately £900 if they are turned in and has them vote for whether to turn them in or kill them. Kieren, Dean, and Gary vote to keep them alive. Bill walks away angrily and Rick follows.

A woman named Lisa Lancaster, who is a member of the HVF, gathers supplies at a grocery store with a rifle in her shopping cart and speaks with her sister Patty about what to pick up. She encounters a young female zombie that is chewing on a body and Lisa falls, injuring her leg. She shoots at the girl and then her weapon jams. Lisa tries to get away but another zombie, Kireren, catches her.

All of this is a nightmare of Kieren's and when he wakes, Dr. Shepherd tells him that these increasingly vivid memories are good because it means his brain functions are returning. The doctor reminds Kieren that he'll be going home soon and his parents are looking forward to seeing him. Kieren says he is a zombie and has killed people but Shepherd corrects his language, reminding him that he suffers from Partially Deceased Syndrome. Kieren is struggling with guilt over his pre-medicated actions. He goes through the release centre where he is given various supplies, including coloured contacts to match his original eye colour.

Back in Kieren's home village of Roarton Vicar Oddie and Human Volunteer Force soldiers are leading a ceremony in the cemetery in memoriam of the recently deceased. Kieren's parents, Sue and Steve, are trying to sell their home to a couple and their daughter Jem exhibits off-putting behaviour. She comes out wearing an HVF armband and Sue tells the couple that the organisation is still carrying on in their area even though they have been defunded. The couple leaves, saying they're looking for something more remote, and Kieren's parents realise that they must also have a child suffering from PDS. Jem storms out, refusing to accompany her parents to pick up Kieren and Steve assures Sue that Jem will come around.

Kieren takes part in group therapy and blames himself for his kills. His roommate Alex reminds him he would have died (permanently) if he hadn't eaten. Alex is also upset at the fact that humans were given medals for killing people with PDS. An argument breaks out and the session leader tells them they are simply acting out because they're on edge about going home soon. He asks Kieren whom he is most looking forward to see and he replies that he wants to see his sister Jem.

Jem is visiting a bar and meets with the HVF leader, Bill Macy, and he warmly greets her, saying she is their best shooter. He tries to order a round of drinks but the owner of the establishment says that HVF will no longer receive free drinks as she cannot afford it. Bill then hands out patrol routes to the men and and is insistent that there are still Rotters out there. He says they'll deal with the ones that are coming back and passes out walkie-talkies which he has paid for himself. He asks Jem if she is alright and she says it's just stuff. They toast to the fallen, all of whom have pictures up on their wall.

Kieren tries to reassure Alex that the rumours about riots aren't true but Alex won't believe him and gives him the name of a man he says he can trust, called the Undead Prophet. Music begins to play over the loudspeakers, leading them to head to the central chamber to receive neurotriptyline injections. Kieren sees Alex sniff some hidden substance and when he goes in and receives his injection, he begins to spit out black bile and goes berserk. He is quickly subdued by the guards and taken away. That night, Kieren and other sufferers are given their personal possessions and loaded onto a truck.

Early in the morning, when it's still dark out, Sue and Steve get into their car to go pick up Kieren. One of their nosy neighbours spies them from his window.

Kieren wakes up, following another nightmare of his attack on Lisa and goes to put his contact lenses and facial mousse on to make his complexion resemble those un-afflicted his condition. He looks again at the paper from Alex and sees that it has the URL of the group, the Undead Liberation Army, and a password. One of the workers comes to retrieve him and bring him to his parents. Sue becomes emotional, and both his parents are amazed at how normal he looks. He says it's simply because of the mousse before he heads to the car with his parents and the worker accompanies them. He warns them that it will take time for people to adjust and enquires about the HVF. The Walkers say there have been some difficulties but that they aren't as resistant to assimilation.

Back in Roarton, Vicar Oddie is at a gathering where he is speaking against the Rotters, while the villagers enthusiastically agree with his hate-speak. MP Giles Weir is brought up to speak and attempts to explain that the sufferers are not medicated and legally required to continue their treatment. Bill says that the government promised to send help but none ever came. Giles says that with the limited resources had to go to the cities first. Ever the diplomat, he expresses his gratitude to the HVF for their work and the inspiration is gave to other rural areas but he is shouted down by the crowd, led by mayor Ken Burton and he is then ushered out by his assistant.

As he is being driven home, Kieren spots pro-HVF signs and asks who the HVF are but his parents evade the question. As they get back into town, they are surrounded by people leaving the gathering hall. Steve has already had Kieren hide in the back seat and covered him with his jacket. Ken comes over and tries to get into the car so they can drive into town together but luckily for the Walkers, Ken is called away by Shirley Wilson and the Walkers drive off hurriedly. They get home and back into the garage while another neighbour watches from across the street. Kieren is confused about the secrecy but his parents assure him that everything will be alright. He is amazed to learn that they had kept his room as it was and heads upstairs.

Sue pays the Walkers a visit and says she knows that Kieren is back. She tells them she was trained a PDS community caregiver and is brought inside to administer Kieren's neurotriptyline injection. She instructs them on how to do it for future reference. When Kieren receives it, he has more memory flashes of beating Lisa unconscious. Shirley lets them know he will have to receive an injection every day and advises them to keep Kieren inside for the foreseeable future. Steve brings up the PDS protection act but Shirely says there might be a spot of bother. Shirely pulls Sue aside and gives her a taser as required by law. Sue doesn't understand why she would need it and Shirley explains that PDS teenagers have begun taking a drug called Blue Oblivion and that if Kieren takes any blue pills, she should use the taser and call Shirley immediately. She tells her to call her if she needs anything but to not tell anyone that she is a PDS caregiver, including her son Phillip.

The Roarton town council are discussing Halloween while Bill would rather complain about nothing being done about the HVF. The clerk, Phillip, speaks up and says that having people go out dressed as monsters would be distressing to the townspeople. Bill then changes his vote, thus maintaining the ban. Oddie then invites Phillip to his office for a drink and says there are whispers of PDS sufferers being integrated back into the town. He then asks about Phillip's mum, who Phillip says still works at the hospital but then Oddie says he has stopped by the hospice and she no longer works there. Phillip doesn't understand, as she has left for work every morning, and Oddie suggests that he find out.

Kieren sits down for dinner with his parents and asks where Jem is. Sue assure him that she'll be there shortly. Kieren tells her that he no longer eats but she asks him to pretend. He obliges her and then Jem walks in and says that she won't come in as long as "that" (Kieren) is there. He walks out but when Jem comes in, she complains about the food and leaves again. Kieren goes up to his room and looks overhis old paint brushes. He then pulls out a box of photos and looks at one of him and Jem from some years prior.

Bill and his wife Janet celebrate the birthday of their dead son Rick. They place a cake on the mantelpiece where they have put a shrine together for him.

Shirley is at home and Phillip asks after her day. She says she has been on her feet all day at the hospice and he doesn't confront her about his learning that she no longer works there. She goes to bed and Phillip snoops through her laptop and finds the files on the PDS cases of Roarton. They are password-encrypted and he's unable to guess it. Shirley catches him and when she asks what he's doing, he claims to be watching pornography to reveal stress. He says he might be a sex addict and claims he'll go cold turkey right now. She tells him to scan it for viruses and heads off to bed.

Kieren dreams and gains more memories of feeding on Lisa. He wakes to find Jem standing over him, briefly seeing her as Lisa. She asks what he is, since her brother was a kind, gentle person whereas he is a monster. She tells him to prove he is who he claims to be by saying something only Kieren knew. He tells her about how she walked on her tiptoes for nine months when she was eleven. He goes on to explain that she didn't want to be noticed so he made her a hardcore metal mix CD. Jem begins to cry and says he didn't leave her a note. Kieren says he wanted to disappear after Rick Macy's death and he blames himself for Rick's joining the Army. Kieren apologises and Jem curses at him and throws a drink at him. Steve comes out to ask about the shouting and Jem says Kieren can't kill himself twice before slamming the door shut to her room.

The following morning, Kieren plays the game of Life with his parents and upon spotting the stack of board games his parents have brought out, it's clear he won't be leaving the house anytime soon. Jem it at the Roarton train station, drinking alone.

After he is left alone, Kieren goes onto the computer and visits the ULA website. There's an advert for Blue Oblivion and a hooded figure delivers a recorded message that says it was filled with guilt until it was able to move past the shame. It talks about how they are truly blessed for having been resurrected from the dead. When Steve comes in, Kieren closes the tab and claims to be checking the weather.

Oddie visits Bill and shares a file, saying that they have intelligence on a PDS sufferer in their town. He spouts scripture about being a shepherd and then Bill goes home, putting on his camo jacket and collecting his rifles. He tells Janet there's a Rotter in Roarton and says he's off to kill it, calling himself the shepherd.

Jem hears Bill on her radio telling the other HVF forces that he's headed to the street she lives on to get a Rotter. She gets home and warns her parents and Kieren. Jem loads a revolver, Sue and Steve grab anti-zombie weapons from the shed, and then Steven tells Jem to hide Kieren. She takes him upstairs and hides him in a closet.

Bill, Gary, and Dean arrive and Dean comes to their door, ringing the doorbell. Steve answers and Dean asks for Jem. Steve calls her down and she heads outside with Dean. Kieren goes to the window and watches as Ken's wife Maggie is dragged out onto the street. Ken pleads for them to stop and Bill points out that the last time he had seen her, she was in a casket. Ken claims it was Maggie's sister but then Bill point his rifle at her head. She pleads for mercy and then he lowers his gun. He tells her to take out her contact lenses. She does so and her eyes are shown to be yellow and then Bill shoots her dead. Ken cries over his wife's corpse in the middle of the streets and the HVF begin to drive off.

Jem goes inside and Sue asks if she's alright. She shakes her head no and Sue hugs her. Steve heads upstairs where he quickly realises that Kieren witnessed what just occurred and sits down next to him. Bill returns home to find an MP sitting with Janet. He thinks he's about to reprimanded and claims he did what he had to. He is then informed that they found Rick in Afghanistan. At first, he's thrilled but then Janet explains that he is only partially alive.

Steve tells Kieren everything's going to be alright and heads back downstairs. Kieren goes to visit Jem in her room and finds that she is putting her loaded revolver beneath her pillow. He then walks away, leaving her alone.
