David S. Goyer Continues as Executive Producer

Beverly Hills, Calif. – May 6, 2014 – Starz Chief Executive Officer Chris Albrecht today announced a third season for the STARZ Original series “Da Vinci’s Demons” has been greenlit. The historical fantasy, created and executive produced by David S. Goyer and produced by Adjacent Productions, follows the ‘untold’ story of the world's greatest genius, Leonardo da Vinci, during his turbulent youth in Renaissance Florence.

John Shiban joins “Da Vinci’s Demons” season three as executive producer and showrunner. Shiban began his career as a staff writer on FOX’s “The X-Files.” During his stint on the celebrated FOX series, Shiban wrote or co-wrote over twenty episodes and served as executive producer by the end of the series’ nine-year run. His writing on “The X-Files” garnered him an Emmy® nomination. As a producer, Shiban has also been honored with a Golden Globe® Award and an Emmy® nomination for Outstanding Dramatic Series for “The X-Files.” Shiban joined AMC's “Breaking Bad” as a consulting producer in its second season, penning several episodes of the acclaimed series. He received a WGA Award nomination for Episodic Drama for the episode “Phoenix” and wrote and directed Season Three’s penultimate episode “Sunset.” On AMC’s “Hell on Wheels,” Shiban served as executive producer and showrunner, writing and directing numerous episodes.

Series creator David S. Goyer will continue to serve as executive producer.

“We’re excited to continue Leonardo da Vinci’s adventures with a third season of ’Da Vinci’s Demons’ with John Shiban joining the ranks as executive producer and showrunner,” said Carmi Zlotnik, managing director of Starz. “David S. Goyer’s vision of da Vinci’s journey continues to entertain fans, taking them deeper into the world of ‘Da Vinci's Demons’ where there is still much more story to tell.”

"I'm very proud of this modern take on the endlessly fascinating Leonardo da Vinci -- everyone from the writers, directors, cast and all the crew have been invaluable and will continue to be for what we have ahead," says Goyer. "I've been a fan of John's work for some time and I'm excited to add his voice to the mix."

“I’m thrilled to be joining the amazing creative team behind ‘Da Vinci’s Demons,’” said Shiban. “Starz and Adjacent have given us an amazing playground to play in - I can’t wait to dig further into the untold history of Leonardo da Vinci."

Brilliant and passionate, the 25-year- old Leonardo da Vinci is an artist, inventor, swordsman, lover, dreamer and idealist. As a free thinker, with intellect and talents that are almost superhuman, he struggles to live within the confines of his own reality and time.

STARZ DEBUTS ALL-NEW BLACK SAILS AND DA VINCI'S DEMONS TRAILERS FROM NEW YORK COMIC CON

Today STARZ released an all new trailer of its hotly anticipated drama, “Black Sails,” as well as the first-ever trailer for the anticipated second season of “Da Vinci’s Demons” at New York Comic Con. “Black Sails” is a STARZ Original series from executive producer Michael Bay premiering on STARZ in January 2014. The second season of “Da Vinci’s Demons,” created by David S. Goyer (co-writer of The Dark Knight trilogy, screenwriter of Man of Steel) will return to STARZ in Spring 2014.

The eight-episode first season of “Black Sails” centers on the tales of Captain Flint and his men, and takes place twenty years prior to Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic “Treasure Island.” Toby Stephens (Die Another Day) stars as Flint, the most brilliant and most feared pirate captain of his day, who takes on a fast-talking young addition to his crew who goes by the name John Silver.  Threatened with extinction on all sides, they fight for the survival of New Providence Island, the most notorious criminal haven of its day – a debauched paradise teeming with pirates, prostitutes, thieves and fortune seekers, a place defined by both its enlightened ideals and its stunning brutality.

Season two of “Da Vinci’s Demons” finds Florence thrown into chaos in the wake of the Pazzi conspiracy and Leonardo da Vinci (Tom Riley) must push the limits of his mind and body to defend the city against the forces of Rome. While the Medicis go to unthinkable lengths to deal with new threats, da Vinci continues on his quest to find the fabled Book of Leaves and uncover the secret history of his mother.  He'll come to realize that he has lethal competition in his quest -- new enemies who may be even worse than the forces of Pope Sixtus.  His search will take him to faraway lands and force him to reevaluate everything he knew about the world and his own history.

“Black Sails” is executive produced by Michael Bay (Transformers, Armageddon, Pearl Harbor) and his Platinum Dunes partners Brad Fuller and Andrew Form, producers on The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2003) and Nightmare on Elm Street (2009).  The series was created by showrunner and executive producer Jon Steinberg (creator “Jericho,” “Human Target”) and co-executive producer Robert Levine (“Touch”).  It has already been greenlit for a second season.

STARZ greenlit “Da Vinci’s Demons” for a second season following its record-setting first season weekend debut on STARZ on Friday, April 12. The historical fantasy created by David S. Goyer and produced by Adjacent Productions, follows the ‘untold’ story of the world's greatest genius, Leonardo da Vinci, during his turbulent youth in Renaissance Florence.  Outside of the United States and English-speaking Canada, “Da Vinci’s Demons” is distributed internationally by BBC Worldwide. Fox International Channels (FIC) acquired the first season of the series and premiered it to audiences in 120 countries in Latin America, Europe, Asia, the Middle East and Africa following Starz’s exclusive premiere in the U.S.

Warner Bros. and DC Entertainment: Superman's 75th Anniversary Celebration Panel

Superman turns 75 this year, and any big Superman fan should have been at this panel. Earlier in the day director Zach Snyder made a little announcement there was going to be a Batman Vs. Superman Movie, and even with that it was kinda crazy to walk right into this panel room without any kind of wait. Perhaps it was because the current Man of Steel himself, Henry Cavill wasn’t confirmed for it, and didn’t show up when Zach made his big announcement, but he was in San Diego, so there was a chance.

It was advertised as a star studded panel of cast, filmmakers, artists and writers from Superman's illustrious history and it delivered in spades. The original Jimmy Olsen from Adventures of Superman, Jack Larson was in attendance, along with Tim Daly (Superman: The Animated Series) and Molly Quinn (Superman: Unbound), comics luminaries: Paul Levitz, Grant Morrison, Dan Jurgens and Jim Lee, and plus talent from the current blockbuster, Man of Steel: Writer David Goyer, Dylan Sprayberry who played one of the young Clark Kents, and the Man of Steel himself, Henry Cavill.

In fact, everyone was so excited to see Henry Cavill he got a standing ovation.

Once everyone got the excitement under control a comic con representative came out to award Jack Larson the Inkpot award. It’s a hug honor given to individuals for their contributions to the worlds of comics, science fiction/fantasy, film, television, animation, and fandom services.

“It’s been my observation that Warner Brothers, over the years, has been very fortunate to get amazing actors to portray Superman. I’m honored to have been a part of it since 1951,” Jack Larson, said.  He mentioned that he liked how Henry portrayed Superman, but he is also a fan of Dean Cain’s portrayal.
The entire panel shared their feelings on the character of Superman and his legacy. It was agreed that he is a paramount, a boy scout, doing the right thing even when it’s the hard thing.

Recommendations for Superman comics were made, if fans had never read a comic. Each of the big comic creators had a very different recommendation. Paul Levitz recommended Superman: Unchained by Scott Snyder and Jim Lee. Grant Morrison recommended “Superman Vs. Muhammad Ali.” And Jim Lee recommend Grant’s All-Star Superman. He praised Morrison’s ability to capture the spirit of the past and bring all of Superman’s history into the story.

All the “Super” portrayers were asked about the responsibility of their roles. Cavill although fully aware, couldn’t let the pressure get to him he wouldn't have been able to do the roll justice so he had to push it to the very back of his mind. He says he knew the character means so much to so many people.

Tim Daly added to that sentiment, commenting how the character transcended class and nationality, and that he was such a hugely important character that he took that responsibility to heart when working on the show. Even Molly Quinn admitted to thinking about Supergirl all the time, and empathizing with her frustration and her situation.

One fan asked if Cavill drew from previous actor’s portrayals of Superman, but he says he avoided watching previous Superman films because he wanted to have his own interpretation of the character without being effected by past versions. “I felt that those were other people interpretations and I wanted to honor the source material and not the movies before. I felt that it would be too removed if I studied those roles instead of the source, the comics.”

On the question of super powers, flight seemed to be a top choice. Quinn chose X-Ray vision, and Sprayberry jokes about the power to have great hair all the time, but Morrison chimes in that he thinks he's already got that. Goyer,  the power of freeze breath, and Cavill would choose his unbreakable spirit that connects him so strongly with human kind. But the best answer had to be Morrison who brought up the Man of Steel’s long forgotten ability to shoot a smaller version of himself out of his finger. “This is real! He could project this tiny little Superman that he eventually got mad at because everyone started to love the tiny Superman.” How could one not love a mini superman? And where do I sign up for one?

The best parts of getting ready to film the movie? Cavill always the good sport says getting into really good shape was extremely exhausting but the feeling of being that healthy was one of the best parts. I’m sure walking around with that amazing physique didn’t hurt.

The evolution of Superman was also discussed. Morrison touched on the malleability of Superman, that he’s evolved throughout the years, a reflection of us as a society. Of course this also brings up that little announcement that was made in Hall H earlier in the day. David Goyer noted that Superman and Batman would be coming to the screen together in the recently announced 2015 film. “We aren’t sure if the title will be Batman Vs Superman or Superman Vs Batman, but they will face off.” Jim Lee added that Superman got a raw deal in The Dark Knight Returns comic series by Frank Miller so a rematch was in order, which just so happens to be the very series that was read from prior to that earlier announcement.

Also during the panel, The Superman Real Heroes project was mentioned. You can watch or share your own stories about everyday real heroes. Even Henry has recorded a message. You can check it out here: http://realheroesproject.org/

STARZ Releases Poster Art For David S. Goyer's "DA VINCI'S DEMONS"

STARZ Unveils Key Art for Upcoming Original Series "Da Vinci’s Demons”

Series from David S. Goyer Premieres Friday, April 12 at 10pm ET/PT

Today, Starz released the first official key art for its upcoming original series, “Da Vinci’s Demons,” premieringFriday, April 12 at 10pm ET/PT. The series, created by David S. Goyer, the mind behind The Dark Knight Trilogyand upcoming feature film, Man of Steel, presents a never-before-seen portrayal of one of the most infamous historical figures of all time…Leonardo da Vinci.

The key art features da Vinci (played by Tom Riley), an artist, inventor, swordsman, dreamer and idealist, with one of his famed inventions sketched behind him.  Da Vinci's flying machines have fascinated and inspired people for centuries and are a symbol of his genius and iconoclasm.

"Leonardo was a transformational figure—the original Renaissance man and the kind of genius that only emerges every thousand years or so,” said series creator David S. Goyer.  “What I like about this image is that it embodies a lot of the show's themes.  It's aspirational.  The triumph of the human spirit over ignorance and repression—the audacity of imagination."

While the da Vinci depicted in the history books was renowned for his works of art and inventions that included the calculator, army tank, diving suit, solar power and many more, “Da Vinci’s Demon’s” depicts a 25-year-old da Vinci on the cusp of greatness, with intellect and talents that are almost superhuman. In the series, he struggles to live within the confines of his own reality and time, tortured by his unsurpassed intellect. He begins to not only see the future, but invent it.

David S. Goyer, known for co-writing The Dark Knight Trilogy, the upcoming Man of Steel and serving as story editor for “Call of Duty: Black Ops,” and “Black Ops II”, the most successful video game franchise of all time, also served as showrunner on “Da Vinci’s Demons” and directed the first two episodes.

After its premiere on Friday, April 12th at 10pm ET/PT, following the finale of “Spartacus: War of the Damned,” “Da Vinci’s Demons” will air Friday nights at 9pm ET/PT on STARZ. Join the conversation at: #DaVincisDemons.
