Marvel's Runaways S01E10 "Hostile" Recap

The teens prepare to fight their parents. The dinosaur shows up and Gert's father shoots it with a tranquilizer. Chase tries to blast them with the fitstigons but Tina's staff protects it. Molly tries to pick up a heavy barrel to throw at them but Jonah shows up and blasts her with power of his own to knock her down. His body is glowing and despite please to not hurt the kids, he blasts them to send them all flying back. The kids get up and move forward again to try to stand their ground. Gert removes the tranquilizer from the dinosaur, who walks forward with her to line up with the other teens. Karolina tells the others to go, saying she'll hold Jonah off. They object, Nico in particular, but eventually relent and leave. Jonah glows completely, a bright white light to match Karolina's more pink shade of glow. He blasts her and then she blasts him back. Their beams of light are pressed up against one another until a hole forms between them. The teens who are still running away take cover when a large blast comes rushing by them, knocking out the street lights.

The Runaways hide out in the woods. Nico wants to do everything they can to save Karolina but the rest of the group is more skeptical before deciding they should work together to find her. Their parents are pondering how they've been played by Jonah, Leslie, and Karolina being at the epicenter of everything going on. The Yorkes admit they didn't know about Molly's abilities. Tina admits that Leslie was at the lab that took out the Hernandezes. She didn't know what Leslie was going to do but didn't do anything to stop her. The parents don't want their children to be in danger and decide they need to figure out this plan is really all about.

Jonah has 'kidnapped' Karolina, who has been brought back to the church where she is hooked up to the machine that tended to his health needs when he was sickly and in need of sacrifices to rejuvenate him.

Nico asks Chase about his hooking up with Gert and he admits that it's complicated because he really likes her. They're at a store looking for disguises, with Molly not far off looking at sunglasses and wigs.

Alex had been looking for a laptop to use and Gert was looking after her dinosaur which is now named Old Lace. The team reunites and votes against Gert, saying they can't bring Old Lace with them because it's too dangerous to keep when they need to be staying hidden as they move from place to place. Gert speaks to Old Lace in private, explaining why they need to stay apart for now. She instructs Old Lace to stay hidden during the day and only hunt at night, promising they'll reunite when things are calmer.

The Runaways approach a worker, Vaughn, from the Church of Gibborim to ask for his help to find Karolina, saying she's in trouble. They point out how young people go missing every year like clockwork and Karolina is next if they don't do something. He doesn't want to betray the church despite his concerns for Karolina. Donning their disguises, Chase and Molly get on one of the recruiting buses for the Church of Gibborim.

The Yorkes discover something is in the hole Jonah is having them dig that is alive, and inform Leslie of this when she approaches them as they work. Leslie didn't know about it, as Jonah has been keeping secrets from her too.

Vaughn recognises Chase and Molly and helps them by bringing them into the back areas to try to find Karolina. When they find her, they must take off running to get away from church employees. Nico tells Gert how Chase said that he really likes her and Gert is somewhat taken aback by the information. Alex finds a car and gets everyone rounded up, including Chase, Molly, and Karolina once they get outside. Leslie is revealed to have approved Vaughn to help the Runaways rescue Karolina. She assures him that she is still in charge of the church.

Alex's parents had confront Jonah about the safety of the kids at the church and Alex overheard them say that they will find him themselves. The teens make it back to their hideout in the woods but Alex slips away to use a payphone in town to call Darius for backup, claiming that the enemy of his enemy is his friend. Their deal is that Alex will tell Darius everything he knows about Pride in exchange for hundreds of dollars that Alex needs to by a gun to protect himself and his friends.

The parents, minus the Wilders who are sticking to finding Alex themselves, all meet. Leslie apologises for her deception and admits that she was indirectly responsible for Amy's death and is unsure of Frank's loyalty to be able to be brought in to their circle. She says that when Amy found something confidential it set off the alarm and Jonah wanted to talk to her, to scare her into keeping quiet. She tried to send a text to Amy to warn her to get out but it didn't work, clearly. Leslie believes Jonah killed Amy. The Minorus are outraged but the remaining parents have no choice but to work together to be able to kill Jonah.

Jonah meets with Frank and they plan their next move while observing Victor's body. Jonah needs another sacrifice.

Alex returns to the group while his father is at home telling his wife he needs to make a call that will ensure the kids get to safety. Then they as adults will be able to go to war against Jonah. The Runaways head to a bus station, prepared to go on the run. Gert is outside while the others are inside looking at the schedule. She hears a banging in the nearby dumpster and finds Old Lace is hiding inside eating some discarded scraps. Gert runs inside to let her friends know that Old Lace is back but then they all see a news story that is claiming they are wanted for Destiny's murder. A nearby man also watching the story recognises their faces from the screen so they all get outside and take off running.

Marvel's Runaways S01E09 "Doomsday" Recap

Ten years ago the Hernandezes were working with some strange rocks that glow and move. They call the Steins to show them some of their findings but after the call the Hernandezes find they are locked in the room with a bomb that detonates. Molly was with them in the room that exploded but survives due to her holding one of the strange rocks which gives her the super powers that have since manifested. Leslie is revealed to be the one that set up the bomb and afterwards she calls Tina to tell her she handled it. Right after the call, Tina burns her hand on a pan she was cooking food in.

In the present, Gabriela discovers that Molly has snuck out. Nico tries to check on Amy's phone but is interrupted by her father who says that her mother has allowed him to move back home and now they will seemingly try to mend their relationship. Since her father likes to spend time in Amy's room to get some comfort so Nico has to wait to be able to check on the phone.

Karolina talks with Frank who doesn't want the kids putting themselves in danger going against Pride and wants to handle things himself.

Janet implores Chase to not make waves regarding Victor's absence, which she has already given an excuse to the public for. She assures him that Jonah is invested in Victor's survival and Pride is working hard to help him but now Chase needs to be careful. The teens are still angry at Chase, Alex in particular. Chase tries to apologise to Alex but now the group has no idea of what their next step is. Alex proposes they call themselves the "Runaways" in memoriam of all the people they haven't been able to save. They all decide to go to the upcoming school dance since according to Gert, if there's nothing left for them to do then they might as well just dance.

In a flashback to fifteen years prior, Tina returns home and finds that Jonah has sent the babysitter home and is playing with a young toddler Amy. Nico is just an infant. Jonah ominously warns Tina that raising girls is easy until they're teenagers which is when they turn on their mothers.

In the present, Jonah wants to use Geoffrey's drilling company to dig a hole deep underneath Los Angeles. He assigns the other Pride members to keep the job on task. Darius is monitoring the area by paying off one of the guards but the guard comes out to tell him he and the other employees have been fired. Darius says he has been twenty years to find out what Darius has been up to.

Molly sneaks back to the school to meet the group and shows them the VHS tape she found. Alex directs them to a place where they find a tape-player and on it they find a video of Molly's parents that tell her about Pride. Pride is planning on digging something up deep in the city and that they had been led to believe they were finding a renewable energy source but with the research they've been doing they are concerned that digging in deep to retrieve what they're after will cause cataclysmic seismic events. They warn Molly that if they're watching this they weren't able to stop it themselves and send her their love, imploring her to stop Pride and apologising that they couldn't be the ones to do it. The group speculates that this could've been the reason Molly's parents died and become renewed in their motivation to stop their parents. They realise that the work they're claiming to do on the school has all been a front for this one goal. Though they're just teenagers, they know they need to stop this because no one else will. They decide to still go to the dance as it will be the perfect cover to investigate the drilling site.

Frank confronts Jonah with what he knows about Pride.

Nico shows Alex the text from Amy's phone that warned her about some unknown man finding out what she was up to and to get out. They try to speculate on who she might've been involved with but are interrupted by Robert coming in reminding them to come out so Tina can take pictures of them. When they're alone again Nico insists to him that she's no longer romantically interested in him because of his keeping secret what he knew about Amy. He's still interested but she remains firm in her resolve.

The Steins call Graciela to check in on Molly and are alarmed to find out that she ran off. Graciela reveals how the Hernandezes didn't trust them enough to leave the key with them and insists that they leave Molly alone. The Steins ponder on how the Hernandezes must have known that they would end up in a compromised position and that they must've been up against the same battles they are now fighting and lost. Their train of thought is interrupted by Jonah who calls to insist that Pride comes over for a group meeting.

The teens all arrive at the dance. Molly waits in the car with the dinosaur and advises Gert to go 'get' Chase and live her truth. She meets Chase inside and she opens up about often feeling invisible at school. He points out how she always thought he was an idiot but she admits she never actually though that and only said it because she felt ignored. She brings him to a back room so they can have one last dance before the world ends. He tells her he always saw her and the two have sex. Nico, Karolina, and Alex are waiting in the car with Molly and are wondering why Chase and Gert are taking so long. Nico and Karolina head back into the dance to look for them but Karolina takes the moment of privacy to kiss Nico, admitting her feelings for her. Right after, a disheveled Chase and Gert emerge. They all head out, not acknowledging any of the unresolved issues in their romantic entanglements.

Jonah has Pride gathered and informs them of all that their children know and how they've been conspiring against them for weeks. Jonah confronts each of the adults for their transgressions against him and he reminds them that the consequences of questioning his leadership will be severe. He asks them where their children are, skeptical of the cover story of them going to the dance. The parents return to their homes to find all the missing supplies, including the staff, the fistigons, the dinosaur, and the key card to the digging site.

Darius is waiting in a restaurant near the digging site with his pregnant wife. He confides in her about his determination to find out what is going on. She warns him that she doesn't want to raise this child alone. Darius says how he has seen things like a glowing girl, super gloves, and super strength. He wants to take whatever is going on away from Geoffrey. He plans to wait out in his car to keep an eye on the digging site, and she leaves to head home and get some sleep.

The teens arrive at the digging site and reaffirm their friendship, despite the conflicts they've experienced. They agree to all work together to stop the drill. A security guard says that Alex's father isn't in charge anymore but the Church of Gibborim is. Karolina tells the guard to call Frank, who confirms her cover story but is revealed to have Jonah in the car and is working with him. The teens are let into the construction site where Chase and Gert begin to work on the drill. Gert tries to claim that their having sex was simply the result of them being teenagers with hormones caught up in the moment. Chase uses his fistigons to destroy the drill while Molly pushes a large truck into the hole. Nico uses the staff to try to fill the hole but the adult members of Pride arrive and Tina uses her advanced knowledge to summon the staff back to her. The parents insist that everything they've done has been to protect their children but the teens insist on fighting back, with Molly revealing her glowing eyes and Karolina removing her bracelet to reveal her hyper-glowing states. The adults are all shocked by the display, with Leslie saying she didn't know about this but it is what she was afraid of.

Marvel's Runaways S01E08 "Tsunami" Recap

Victor is bleeding out after Janet shot him. The other members of Pride arrive to provide medical attention to him.

Alex reveals to Nico how he had been helping Amy before she died. He uncovered that her mother had hacked Amy and had ben monitoring her keystrokes, causing her to be frightened. Kincaid had tracked her down and urged her to admit what she did because her mother would find out regardless. Alex and Nico have a falling out due to Alex keeping Amy's secrets from her, as she's never recovered from the trauma of losing her sister.

Molly is sent to live with her relative, Graciela, and is devastated by the feeling of being seemingly discarded and abandoned. The Steins are also summoned by Janet with a single word that is code for a disaster: "tsunami".

Chase is sent upstairs to patch up while Pride works on helping Victor. They are adamant about not calling the police as Janet was having an affair and shot him with a gun given to her by her lover, Robert, and it would only lead to disastrous things. Chase pleads with his mother for answers about his father's rapid mood swings. Janet has compassion for Chase still having love for his father despite everything.

The Steins try to give Victor medical help while the other members of Pride refrain from calling Leslie, believing it only cause problems since they feel she is too close to Jonah. Chase tries to call Gert to talk but she misses the call since she's spending time with the dinosaur. Chase calls Karolina next and she picks up. He tries to ask her to come over but changes his mind, not wanting to get her involved despite his wish to not be alone. Karolina then calls Nico to say that she thinks something is wrong. Karolina also calls Gert, who tells her how Molly has been sent away. Gert notes that Karolina doesn't want to be alone with Chase because he kissed her and she likes Nico, who likes/liked Alex. She agrees to come along and after the call is surprised and pleased to find that Chase had called her first.

Leslie arrives to help Victor by bringing Frank along, believing he'll be able to heal him with his new gloves. For some unknown reason, his healing powers don't fix Victor but send him into a coma instead. Jonah arrives and Leslie denies having been the one to call him. Tina is revealed to have been the one to call him, thinking there was no other option. He tells Pride to set up the devices and wants Victor to be revived in the same manner he himself gets revived. He orders the group to have Janet be sacrificed since she was the one who shot Victor.

Gert and Karolina show up to Chase's house where Gert picks the lock so they can get inside. However, Gert's dinosaur has followed her there. They bring the dinosaur along as they head further inside to find Chase. Chase has a confrontation with Frank but Karolina shows up and intervenes, telling Chase to go upstairs where Gert is already waiting. Karolina stays behind and tells Frank everything she knows about Pride, wanting her to stay good and uninvolved in the horrible things Pride have done. Chase is frightened when he returns to his room and sees the dinosaur but Gert assures him she can control the dinosaur.

Graciela gives Molly a mysterious letter containing a key and a message to find her stuffed elephant. Graciela recalls how she once lost her elephant at a train station so she decides to check the nearest train station to follow the lead. She sneaks out that night instead of waiting till morning.

Janet is alarmed at the prospect of being forcibly sacrificed for Victor. She tries to convince them to not put her in and Jonah says that he doesn't care which one of them gets sacrificed but someone has to do it. They begin to argue, especially when Jonah threatens the lives of their children. Dale pulls the gun on the group that Janet had used to shoot Victor, not wanting his daughters to be put in danger till Geoffrey pulls out a gun of his own, forcing Dale to disarm. Jonah says either Janet will go in the box or Chase will. She agrees to go but then Robert speaks up, wanting a moment alone to talk to her. He tells her to say goodbye to Chase or else he will never have the closure. But when she steps away, Robert puts on a fistigon and insists that he will be the one to go in the box. Jonah declares that he's fine with Robert sacrificing himself but Tina refuses to let him die and uses her staff to destroy the pod. Leslie and Tina nearly come to blows since Victor is the only one that can make a new box but Jonah breaks up the conflict, saying they will resolve the matter at a later point. Victor will be kept somewhere same until they can find another way to revive him. Robert apologises to Tina for all that he is done to betray their relationship, moved by her significant sacrifice to save him.

Nico is at home snooping through her sister's belongings again and finds a bag of her things which include her old cellphone. She retrieves footage of their parents performing a ritual and sends it to Alex.

Janet checks on Chase and assures him that Victor is being taken care of. Chase still wants another chance with his father once he has healed.

Molly arrives at the train station and finds a locker that her key unlocks. Inside is a VHS tape.

Alex tells Nico he has determined that their parents don't want to perform these rituals but they still don't know why they do so. Chase, Gert, and Karolina arrive and both Chase and Karolina agree that the footage shouldn't be shared. Chase thinks that if their parents are exposed his father will die while Karolina thinks that Frank will be able to help them. Chase attacks Alex and destroys his laptop.

At Nico's home, Amy's phone turns back on from being charged. A text message pops up from an unknown caller saying that "he" has found out and that she needs to run. In a flashback, Amy is shown to be trying to gather up some belongings while she was erasing her hard drive but an unknown person arrived and daughter her in her room.

Marvel's Runaways S01E07 "Refraction" Recap

25 years ago, Janet and Victor Stein meet after a university lecture. They ended over their shared interest in unlocking the science behind time travel. After Chase was born, Victor said that his son was the only thing that mattered. But when Chase got older, Victor became cold, distant, and even abusive. Victor wakes in his study and sees a video message from a future Chase on his time machine, telling him not to pick up the fistigons.

Chase still resents his mother for having an affair but she assures him that it's over and that it was only some kindness she took solace in when Victor was a more cruel husband and father. Robert is still in love with her but Nico hasn't turned against her father entirely.

Frank receives some healing gloves from Jonah and uses them to save a dying man. Leslie is suspicious of Jonah and Frank's motives behind these actions. She later confronts Jonah about this move but he remains cryptic, insinuating that he has much bigger plans and wants her to bring her group of friends back together and quickly.

Molly admits to the group of her interactions with Catherine and begins to feel ostracised by how they seemingly treat her like a child. She reaches out to the cheerleading team, wanting to be a part of it. They agree to let her be the 'manager' which entails washing the team's towels, uniforms, and other tedious tasks. Karolina witnesses their first encounter and the two reconnect, growing a closer relationship and not having any hard feelings about the stress of recent events.

The Yorkes examine a sample of Jonah's DNA and a sample of it accidentally gets onto Dale's arm. When Stacy comes back in later, she finds him operating with hyperactive behaviour and seems a bit high from coming in contact with Jonah's DNA. Their conversation is interrupted by the arrival of the Wilders. They want to talk about Molly and other important matters but Stacy asks if they can talk at the upcoming open house since it's not a great time. Later, Dale is shown to be lethargic and almost hungover as the effects have worn off.

Frank finds a photo of Jonah with Leslie when she was just a young girl but he looked exactly the same and his suspicions towards him are reignited.

At the open house, Leslie speaks to both Janet and Tina to get the group back on track. She convinces Tina to double-down and take Robert back since his affair with Janet will not be continuing. She also tells him Jonah would like for them to mend things. Tina acknowledges that family is everything. Leslie then approaches Janet and convinces her that Pride is the most important thing. Janet acknowledges that the fair is over and that she'll tell Robert as much.

Dale and Stacey ponder what sort of hangover Victor is going through in his withdrawal from Jonah, since his dose was much larger than what Dale was contaminated with. They encounter the Wilders who warn them about Molly possibly knowing what's going on and whether or not the other kids might know. They say that they need to keep things under control since it will be far worse if Jonah or even Leslie or Tina find out. The kids spot the adults talking and gather together to figure out what to do next. They reaffirm their loyalty to one another and decide the adults need to pay for what they've done.

The open house finishes and Frank confronts Leslie about Jonah, showing her the photograph of a same-age Jonah with her as a young girl. She admits about how he is the higher being that came to visit her father long ago and confirm things he was suspicious of. Frank wishes that she would've been more honest about things sooner and says that he is committed to the church and wants to be with her in all of what's happening. She admits to being involved with him but acknowledges her own feelings of shame on the matter.

Victor secretly threatens the lacrosse coach and orders him to make a public apology to Chase and reinstate him on the team. Janet encounters Robert and ends their affair. He isn't happy but bows out gracefully, acknowledging that Victor's behaviour has changed lately. Tina overhears the conversation and approaches Robert immediately after it ends.

Nico pushes Alex to admit how he knew her mother's password.

Molly returns home and finds the Yorkes packing up her belongings. They want to send her away to an extended relative for some time. Gert defends Molly, who doesn't want to leave but the Yorkes are determined to go through with this, believing they are only protecting Molly, Gert, and the other children by extension. Gert pulls Molly aside and convinces her not to use her powers in a moment of anger as it would only worsen the situation. She promises that they will figure everything out and that she is her sister no matter what. Gert tells Molly she needs to go for now.

Victor returns home and finds Chase working on the fistigons and begins to display his old, typically abusive behaviour. Victor yells that he making Chase into a man and Chase responds that he is sick of having his feelings played with. Victor tries to hit Chase, who ducks the punch and hits him instead in a defensive move. Victor uses the fistigons to send Chase flying through a window. He prepares to injure Chase further but is instead shot by Janet with the gun Robert had given her some time ago.

Marvel's Runaways S01E06 "Metamorphosis" Recap

Fifteen years ago, Jonah gave Geoffrey and Catherine the mansion with the secret room in the basement. All of the same adults are there, including Molly's still-alive parents. Leslie is already a leader and aware of the sacrifices just like Victor and Tina who have already been blackmailed into helping keeping everyone in line. All of the adults were offered help and in exchange Victor forced them into performing these sacrifices that convert people into a form of pure energy that can be consumed by the human body (Jonah's, to be exact).

In the present, Jonah presses Leslie to let him meet Karolina as he is actually her father. He wants to pose as an anonymous billionaire donor to the church and plans to attend the upcoming fundraiser for the school at which he'll be able to meet his daughter. Leslie is weary of the risks of being at an event her husband Frank will be at, as she's concerned he'll be suspicious.

Nico agrees to help Alex break into her mother's private server during the fundraiser event so they can find the surveillance footage of the sacrifices. Tina begins to train Nico to help her understand how to use the staff. She also shares how the staff was created in the lab and was designed to respond to Tina's DNA alone and the genetic similarity between mother and daughter is similar enough that she can access it. Tina also says that she would've let Nico read Amy's diary if she had asked. Tina is still saddened at not understanding why Amy would've killed herself.

Karolina bonds with Frank, who admits his failed attempt to go Ultra has him thinking he was pursuing something that wasn't his and she expresses her interest in the drawing of beings of light done by her grandfather.

Victor is revealed to have cloned his wife's phone and uses it to spy on her as she speaks with Robert. She admits that it's harder to have an affair now that Victor has been a kinder husband and been getting along with Chase. He admits that he knows Victor had been abusive in the past and gifts her a gun to use as a precautionary device, encouraging her to finally tell Victor about them.

The teens decide to take a single limo to the fundraiser and launch their plans to get access to the surveillance footage. They all dress up in their fancy clothing and it's more directly revealed that Karolina is romantically interested in Nico. Karolina reflects on having to re-evaluate who she is now that she sees her religion as a lie and that perhaps now she'll be able to be honest about both who she is and whom she wants to be with.

The teens and adults all arrive at the fundraiser. Jonah reunites with Leslie and Frank becomes suspicious. When the two walk off together, Frank has flashes of a memory that seems to have been erased at one point of him catching Jonah and Leslie together in bed.

Molly becomes concerned when she realises that by sending the parents away to prison she won't be able to get the information Catherine promised to give her about her parents. Molly begins to text Catherine, pressing for her to give her the information immediately, alerting Catherine that something is amiss.

Gert asks Karolina if she's interested in Nico, saying she's supportive if it's the case. Karolina is uncomfortable with speaking about the issue so she points out Gert's interest in Chase, which Gert denies. Karolina asks Chase to get a drink for her just to retaliate against Gert. The pair point out to each other that they're not being honest about who they like, before splitting off.

Karolina grabs a bottle of vodka and heads to the roof. Chase sees her walking out of the main party area when he is approached by Leslie who is looking for Karolina so she can introduce her to Jonah. Chase denies knowing where she is and follows her out. Molly follows Chase to see where he's going. Karolina is drinking her sorrows away and sits on the building's ledge, alarming Chase. An emotional Karolina fumbles the bottle and begins to fall off the ledge. Chase tries to grab her but only ends up pulling her bracelet off. Karolina falls off the ledge but stays suspended as her powers are activated and she's able to float back onto the ledge where Chase puts the bracelet back on her. He kisses her and she appears surprised and unresponsive but doesn't say anything to him to clarify that she's only interested in him as a friend. Molly witnesses the exchange.

Gert flirts with a low-level security guard to keep him distracted while Alex and Nico head up to access the server needed to get the surveillance footage. They realise they need to head to Nico's mother's office to get it. When Alex and Nico take the elevator upstairs, the guard tries to call it in to ask who is accessing the restricted area. Gert begins to play on a vintage video game which distracts the guard further into telling her it's not supposed be touched but her flirtatious charm prevents him from taking any real actions to make her stop. They are interrupted by the PI/security man Tina had contracted to dig up information on the Yorkes when they were trying to run away. Gert charms him into playing on the game with them.

Chase and Karolina get back into the party in time for the main address to be given. Victor begins to struggle with the nanobytes in his head that are supposed to be treating his brain cancer. Tina is giving a speech and thanks Robert for all his support and loyalty to the family. When Victor is given the opportunity to speak, he exposes Janet for having an affair with Robert. Victor collapses due to his cancer and Tina excuses herself, humiliated at Robert's betrayal. Victor is brought to a back room where Chase lets it slip to everyone present, including his mother, that Victor has brain cancer. Janet tries to comfort him but Chase tells her to leave. Dale offers to call 9-1-1 but Leslie says she has a better idea. She updates Jonah on Victor's illness and says she has it under control, despite Jonah's skepticism but he agrees to help.

Tina passes by Gert and the two staff playing on the vintage video game. They are apologetic and complimentary towards her but she says nothing, only giving them a judgmental stare. Gert texts Alex and Nico to warn them she's coming up. They hide behind her desk and Tina comes in and cries to herself. Nico is shocked, having never seen such vulnerability from her mother. Tina returns to the party afterward and Alex and Nico both sneak back shortly thereafter. Nico ponders how it doesn't make sense for the heartless killers they believe their parents to be to break down crying in their private office. Chase updates them on how Karolina can fly and that his mother and Nico's father are having an affair. Nico realises that this is the reason her mother was crying.

Jonah injects Victor with a special serum that cures his ailing health. Afterward Victor is shown to bed in good spirit and no longer angry at his wife. Jonah encounters Karolina and introduces himself to her as one of her mother's old friends that's new in town. Frank offers to drive Karolina home and she heads off to find his car. Frank stares Jonah down suspiciously and is about to follow after Karolina when Jonah stops him, saying he admires all the work he has down for the church. Frank says he failed to go Ultra and Jonah assures him he was successful but simply doesn't know it yet, guiding him to walk off and speak in private. Leslie watches the encounter from afar and Dale ponders how Frank should have no memory of Jonah since he took care of that problem himself. She says Frank doesn't remember him, leaving the pair to ponder what insidious things Jonah has planned for Frank.

Gert catches up with Molly, asking where Chase is. Molly shares how she followed Chase up to the roof where he kissed Karolina. Molly is apologetic but says she didn't want there to be any more lies. Gert is hurt but appreciates her honesty on the matter. Molly approaches Catherine and stresses her need to know about her parents and lets it slip that she 'didn't see a thing' and heads home with Stacey. Catherine tells Geoffrey she messed up and now believes Molly saw everything.

Marvel's Runaways S01E05 "Kingdom" Recap

Eighteen years ago, Geoffrey was in prison serving a sentence for murder and Catherine is his lawyer. Darius is his friend and fellow prisoner. A mysterious man named Jonah pays him a visit and wants to buy a piece of land Geoffrey owns in exchange for at least five million dollars. Geoffrey says he's willing to sell it but he wants to be Jonah's business partner. He convinces Darius to take the blame for Geoffrey's crime so he will have to serve out his sentence and Geoffrey will be able to get out in a month, offering to help Darius and his loved ones in exchange. Darius agrees and Geoffrey promises he won't forget what he has done for him.

In the present day, Darius is revealed to be the one that kidnapped Alex hoping to ransom him back to Geoffrey for one million dollars. Nico calls Karolina, Gery, Molly, and Chase about what has happened so they can work together to save him. Chase hasn't showed up yet but Nico has stolen the staff to aid in finding and saving Alex.

Darius tells Alex how Geoffrey convinced him to confess to Geoffrey's crime then didn't even follow through on what he promised in exchange. Geoffrey summons some LAPD on his payroll to come with him to go after Alex. A shoot-out ensues and Alex ends up getting hold of one of the guns and shoots one of Darius' men, Andre. However, Alex is held at gunpoint by Darius who takes him captive once again.

Chase has been working with his father on his super-powered gloves. Victor apologises for being so hard on him and promises he only ever wanted Chase to fill his potential.

The teens, minus Chase, all pull up behind Darius' car stopped at a red light. Nico tries to use the staff but is unable to make it work as a weapon. Molly gets out of the car and holds the car to prevent it from moving. Darius and his men, along with Alex get out of the car. Karolina removes her bracelet and blasts some light to distract Darius long enough to allow Alex to join back with their group. Chase arrives and knocks Darius back with his gloves. When Darius re-emerges, Nico orders the staff to protect them and it stops all the bullets Darius shoots from hitting them. Darius flees and Molly falls asleep due to her having used her powers.

Alex reaches Geoffrey who is taking the gravely injured Andre back to be sacrificed. Alex is horrified but unable to stop his father. He heads back to the group and implores them to work together with him to save Andre, whom he bonded with while they were captive. Alex doesn't want any more teenagers to die. They all take a moment to process all the special abilities they've gained, and Molly also reveals to everyone that Gert has a dinosaur she can control.

The adults gather and prepare to perform the sacrifice. The kids return to the secret room but the adults aren't there, having chosen to perform the sacrifice in another location. Alex expresses remorse to Nico over having been the one to shoot Andre and regret at not being able to save him and make things right. Nico says she is glad to have gotten Alex back and admits to worrying about him before the pair begin to kiss passionately. Karolina interrupts to say that Chase found a hidden camera in the library and need Alex's tech-savvy to work on it.

The sacrifice is successfully completed.

Alex returns home and gets into a fight with his father, who becomes alarmed when Alex is shown to now be afraid of him. Catherine overhears the argument and warns Geoffrey to not keep any more secrets from her and pushes him to handle Darius when he comes after them again.

Nico sneaks back in to return the staff and her mother catches her, saying it's okay that she is using it. She says they are the only two people that can use the staff and allows Nico to keep it for the night, saying she trusts Nico and hopes that one day she will trust her mother again in return.

Chase returns home and reunites with his father in the lab. Victor shows Chase a time machine he has finished that doesn't work as a transporter but can show images from the future. When they turn on the screen, Victor asks it to show Los Angeles in the future. When it doesn't work, Victor becomes angry and throws the device. He collapses from a splitting headache and reveals he is suffering from brain cancer and not even Janet knows. Chase becomes emotional and the pair hug. As they are leaving the lab, the time machine turns on and shows an image of Los Angeles crumbling.

Frank wakes and is told he failed to go Ultra, leaving him devastated.

The man that Leslie has been tending to is revealed to be Jonah, who has been revived by the sacrifice. He says that the one thing he feared about the sacrifice not coming in time was that he would have died without meeting "her" and pushes Leslie to let him meet her now. Leslie embraces him but secretly appears apprehensive about the request.

Marvel's Runaways S01E04 "Fifteen" Recap

In a flashback, Nico discovers her sister Amy unresponsive. Her mother sends her to her room and when Nico tries to call for an ambulance, her mother knocks her out with the Staff of One. When Nico wakes she finds she has been locked in her room. She uses the home's surveillance system to check on what is going on in the other part of the house and observes her mother paying off a mysterious man.

In the present, Nico gets a call from the rest of the group on a video chat. They tell her about Destiny's body being found and ponder what to do next about determining what their parents are up to.

The Yorkes head out to search for their missing dinosaur though they don't say this is what they're up to when explaining to their daughters why they're leaving. They get a message from Pride about an emergency meeting but ignore the summons, believing the dinosaur to be more important.

Victor attempts to bring a homeless girl he abducted for the sake of the sacrifice but when he meets with Geoffrey and Robert there is nothing and no one in the back of his truck.

Alex arrives at school and Nico tells him that she's read Amy's diary which she snuck out of her mother's desk. There was nothing in there to indicate she would've committed suicide, which was the widely circulated story about how she died. Now Nico wants to go to the police, believing Pride should be exposed for killing Destiny and Amy.

Gert approaches Chase at school to thank him for not exposing her or her parents for the dinosaur. Their conversation is interrupted by the arrival of the lacrosse team. The boy that attempted to rape Karolina refuse to apologise for their actions, demanding Chase apologise so they can carry on as a team but Chase attacks them again instead. A girl named Eiffel berates Karolina, blaming her as a 'slut' that caused the rift on the school's lacrosse team and ruined their chances at having a successful season. Karolina doesn't know whether to believe that something happened to her at the party and asks Gert why Chase wouldn't say anything. Gert speculates that he is trying to protect her.

Leslie Dean tends to the sick patient and strips her clothes off to curl up next to him and a light appears to glow from her crotch. When she emerges from the room, re-dressed, Frank asks her if she is having an affair. She convinces him that she's not and uses the religious rhetoric to convince him that he will soon be able to go Ultra. He is thankful and apologises for accusing her of infidelity.

Chase attends a lacrosse team meeting and gets a text from Karolina asking to talk. Gert is approached by some students that want to join her 'Undermining The Patriarchy' club that she had tried to start in the first episode. Karolina approaches Gert asking to talk and Gert apologetically dismisses the other students and leaves with Karolina. Alex observes Nico leaving school to go to the police station.

Karolina wants Gert's help trying to prove the innocence of their parents, believing she's the only that still has faith in them.

Victor and Robert attempt to kidnap a homeless man but struggle to get him under control before some police officers arrive and arrest them.

Karolina finds her mother has left her laptop behind. They find a file on Ultra and Gert copies it onto an external hard drive and they decide to give it to Alex so he can decrypt the security on it. They are interrupted by the arrival of Chase who wants to speak with Karolina without Gert present. Gert leaves hurt by Chase's dismissal of her feelings. Chase shares how he has quit the lacrosse team despite loving the sport, as he doesn't want to be a part of a group that behaves in such a morally reprehensible way. She brings him inside the house and shows him her glowing powers that are activated when she removes her bracelet. He is a bit frightened but also in awe of the vibrant, colourful display.

Alex meets Nico at the station and waits with her so she can give her statement but they are forced to flee when they see Victor and Robert brought in. Outside, Nico tells Alex she recognised one of the detectives as the man her parents called when Amy died. Now he is in charge of Destiny's case. They realise that their parents have law enforcement on their payroll of whatever they're up to. Alex shows her a gun he stole from his father's desk, saying they need to be prepared to protect themselves.

Tina meets with a PI that she uses whenever she needs to dig up information on people. She pays him for his services, intrigued by the findings he has presented her with.

Stacey Yorkes tells Dale they should hurry up and get away, even if it means leaving behind the dinosaur. She is tired and scared from dealing with everything they have become entangled with.

Molly is attacked at home by the dinosaur but kicks it off with her strength. Molly prepares to have to fight it but when Gert arrives home, she tells the dinosaur to get away from Molly and discovers that the dinosaur will obey the commands she gives. The Yorkes arrives home right as Gert is petting it. They put the dinosaur back in its room and explain that they made it to protect the girls and themselves. They promise to explain everything eventually before being called away by a call from Tina. When they meet with her, she reveals that she knows about their plan to run away to Yucatan. Tina leaves and the Yorkes are distraught at realising how deeply they are trapped. Gert tries to ask what has happened and Dale snaps at her in a moment of distress.

Alex breaks the decryption on the Ultra file and goes through the information with Nico. They discover that Leslie has been taking in runaways with no one to notice if they disappear for many years to sacrifice in these rituals.

Chase works on a robotic hand in his father's lab and his work is interrupted by the arrival of Victor. Victor drops the hand and sits Chase down, who appears afraid of an abusive outburst. Instead, Victor asks Chase to tell him everything about the idea he has for this device and not to worry about the execution of this current design for it, encouraging him to make it better.

Alex and Nico are going through the file at a coffee shop and Alex has to head outside when he is told his car alarm is going off. Nico calls Karolina to share the information they have found on Leslie and how she has been taking runaways in to sacrifice for at least fifteen years. Karolina is unable to say anything on the call. Nico runs outside to check on Alex and observes him being kidnapped by an unknown party in a black car.

Marvel's Runaways S01E03 "Destiny" Recap

The episodes opens with a flashback to a group funeral several years prior. All the leading characters are present with the teenagers being young children. Molly's parents died in a fire that various members of the Pride blame one another for causing though it's yet to be revealed who is actually responsible. Stacey and Dale ask Molly if she would like to go home with them and be part of their family and she agrees.

In the present, Molly is alarmed that she can't find her cat hairpin. It's important to her because her mother gave it to her. Gert assures her that things will be okay. The teens all meet at the beach where they discover a social media post of Destiny seemingly from London. Nico is particularly skeptical, believing the photo could've been easily photoshopped. The group decides to split off to investigate the various pieces of this mystery. Gert and Chase will look into the mysterious creature in her basement, after which they can study. Nico will investigate the Staff of One, Alex will try to look into the secret passage again, and Karolina will continue her investigation at the Church.

Karolina questions Chase about his actions at the party after seeing the two boys he fought about some social media posting they did expressing animosity towards him. She still doesn't know they tried to take advantage of her since she was passed out when it happened.

Victor is working on the lab and Destiny asks him repeatedly to let her go. He turns around to address her but she has disappeared. It appears to be either some sort of hallucination or something supernatural. Janet comes in and the two argue once more.

The Minorus surprise the Yorkes at work with a celebration after a serum they engineered ended up on the cover of an important scientific journal. Afterwards, Tina asks Robert to go on a date so they can try to repair their relationship. Robert suggests she invite Nico, saying she really needs them now.

Gert and Chase look into his father's lab. She encounters some x-ray goggles that allow her to see Chase completely nude. They find one of the containers and find it empty but Gert proposes they look into her parents' lab next, wondering if Destiny ended up the test subject of an experiment.

Catherine relays her suspicions to Geoffrey about Molly's hairclip. She has vials of the serum and proposes using one on Molly if she knows too much. Geoffrey is unhappy with the idea of messing with a young girl's mind, saying that the serum is dangerous and how Kurt Dean (Karolina's father) was never the same afterward. Catherine remains determined to get the truth of whether or not Molly knows too much. Catherine tracks Molly down at a cafe and returns the hairclip, asking if anything was wrong since it was found so far away from where the children were hanging out. Molly claims she was having puberty problems and feigns having them again to flee into the bathroom where she locks herself in and uses her super strength to break through the concrete wall. She promptly passes out by the dumpster right outside of where she broke out.

The Minorus try to get Nico to come to dinner with them but she insists they have a date night for themselves since it's been so long since they did so. After they leave she struggles to get access to the Staff of One.

Alex goes home to try to search the passage way but has to act fast to try to close the door when he realises his father is unexpectedly home. Catherine calls Geoffrey to say that Molly ran off and must know something. He tells her to be sure before doing anything about it. Catherine then finds Molly passed out and gets her into her car. She once again presses her to open up about what happened. When Molly admits to lying, Catherine grabs hold of a hidden device to inject Molly with the serum. But Molly then claims that the older kids had told her to spy on them to make sure the coast was clear so they could raid the liquor cabinet. Catherine believes her and offers to tell Molly more about her parents if there's ever anything she wants to ask about.

Nico finally manages to get the compartment open to access the Staff of One. She pricks her finger on it and it becomes activated. While holding it she goes through an old scrapbook of her sister's, finding a paper snowflake inside and then snow begins to fall in the room.

Nico's parents are enjoying their date but when Tina discretely slips off her underwear and passes it to Robert he gets angry at her for spending so long pushing him away after Amy's death only to try to restart things by acting like characters in a bad movie instead of addressing their marriage in a real way. He leaves the dinner early.

Karolina tries to call Destiny but is unable to reach her. She asks one of the Church staff members about Destiny and he claims she is in London on a Church trip. She asks him about his bracelet and if he sees lights when he takes his bracelet off but he only has a tagline on his wrist, believing this to be what she's referring to. She observes a painting at the Church done by her grandmother that appears to be a similar design of the lights she saw when she took her bracelet off.

Nico panics when she's unable to make the snow stop so she calls Alex for help. Nico believes the snow is magic but Alex believes there's a scientific explanation. When Alex asks her to pass it to him, the staff turns off as does the snow.

The Yorkes are planning to move to a remote ranch in Yucatan with their Gert, Molly, and the genetically engineered dinosaur they are keeping in the basement of their house. They feel that they are free to get away now that the Pride work is over.

Robert runs off to meet with Janet, Chase's mother, with whom he is having an affair. Robert wants to leave Tina and start a real relationship with Janet but she is reluctant.

Nico and Alex work together to clean up the snow before Tina gets home. Nico makes Alex lay down so she can have her mother walk in on them in a mildly compromising position to pretend that they are romantically involved to avoid suspicion of snooping around the staff. Nico walks Alex out and he kisses her goodbye. She claims what they were doing inside was just an act but he is skeptical of this, smiling as he gets into his car. Nico also walks back into her house smiling.

Chase and Gert use Victor's x-ray goggles to investigate the Yorkes' lab in the basement, searching for Destiny, and accidentally release the genetically engineered dinosaur. Though the dinosaur seems a bit aggressive it appears to calm down somewhat when it hears Gert speaking. The dinosaur then runs off when it hears a car honking.

Leslie Dean tends to the patient, concerned that it's never taken this long before and asking them if they feel any different. They tell her nothing has happened. She gets a call from Tina who tells her to turn on the news. On air is a story about Destiny's body being found. Leslie realises that this is why the person upstairs isn't getting any better and the two women reflect on the fact that they are going to need another sacrifice.

Marvel's Runaways S01E02 "Rewind" Recap

The episode re-hashes the events of the first episode but with more of the content filled in on the actions of the main group's parents and the events that led up to their ritual sacrifice that the teenagers discovered.

Alex's parents Catherine and Geoffrey make preparations for the ritual. Chase's father Victor is revealed to have been physically abusive but no longer hits him because he is now strong enough to fight back and win. However, he remains verbally abusive and overbearing. Chase's mother Janet is implied to have secret contact with someone. It's unclear if it's someone she's having an affair with or simply a close relationship. Leslie, Karolina's mother, is informed that Destiny has run off and leaves to search for her. Her husband Frank is visited by his acting agent who tells him he is being dropped due to his affiliation with the church. Frank is a former teen heartthrob that had hoped to restart his career but his now ex-agent advises him to get more involved in the church since it's a more lucrative business than being an actor would be for him anyway. Currently, Leslie is in charge of everything to due with the church, including the finances. However, Frank's former fame was crucial in jump-starting the church.

Tina and Robert, Nico's parents, have a disagreement over her strict rules about people entering Amy's room following her death. Robert warns her that if she doesn't change her way than they will lose Nico too. Tina is shown to have control over a mystical staff that is able to produce shields and walls. Gert and Molly's parents Stacey and Dale are shown to be discussing the creature hidden in their basement, whom Stacey had stayed up all night looking after.

Geoffrey gets a call about an old criminal associate Darius interrupting an ongoing construction project of his. Catherine warns him that this is important to Pride and the other members will not stand for anyone getting in the way of it. Victor struggles with some technical issues regarding the container that will be used in the ritual, as he works on sending a rat through it beforehand. Leslie intercepts Destiny at the bus station where Destiny reveals she has a three year old daughter whose birthday is that day and she wants to reconnect with her. Leslie convinces Destiny to stay a little while longer, surprising her with the stage of "Ultra" in the Church of Gibborim and claiming the ceremony will take place that night.

Geoffrey heads to the construction site where Darius' colleague takes his phone to prevent him from recording their interaction. Geoffrey brings a suitcase that is supposed to have $50,000 to pay him off but instead contains a device surveilling Darius' grandmother's house whom he threatens if Darius should ever interfere with his dealings again. Darius is impressed that Geoffrey has not lost his edge despite having adopted a wealthy, elite life. The two groups part ways as Geoffrey gets his phone back and Darius' crew member is shown to have downloaded data from Darius' phone as part of their true plan.

Frank asks Leslie to take him to "Ultra" and implores her to let him help her with the church and take on more responsibility, swearing he'll be more committed to the church now since he is leaving acting. She stays distant from him and doesn't allow him to attend the closed Pride meeting but says they'll discuss this matter later.

The Pride meeting is under way and Geoffrey expresses reservations at this ritual need to kill a seventeen-year-old particularly since they all now have children of this age. However, the group remains determined that the cause they are doing this for is important and that as long as things go according to plan, this will be the last time they need to do this. The ritual takes place and they are distracted by a light flash but don't see the kids.

The kids flee from the ceremony and Molly has to use her strength to get the door open but the others don't seem to notice, believing they were able to open it together with their combined strength. They head back to Alex's room and speculate on what their parents may have been doing. Nico declares that no matter what the reasoning is, it appears as though their parents have killed a girl. Alex cuts the power while Molly is shown to have fallen asleep, the result of her being depleted by using her powers.

Alex's parents come in and find the teens playing Twister and they all feign ignorance about what has just happened in the secret passage. The adults are fooled into believing there was an electrical problem with the house. They all prepare to leave but Victor stays behind to work on his container but is shocked when he finds that it malfunctioned and Destiny is still alive and inside it.

Gert, Molly, Karolina, Chase, and Nico all leave with their respective parents. Alex's parents ask him about a possible interest in Nico but he doesn't answer anything about it.

Frank tries to get into Leslie's private study but is unable to get past its security measures and is caught by a staff member that tells him he doesn't have the clearance to be there. Behind the door, there is a decrepit figure lying in one of Victor's containers with a sort of respirator hooked up to their face.

Alex texts the group and tells them to meet him the following morning at ten so they can figure out what's going on. Karolina tries to text Destiny. Gert sings Molly to sleep and the sound carries down to the basement where the mysterious, seemingly reptilian creature is being kept. Geoffrey finds one of Molly's hairpins outside the entrance to the secret passage.

Marvel's Runaways S01E01 "Reunion" Recap

A girl named Destiny appears to have run away from home. She calls her family but hangs up when they answer. She is followed by two men whom she believes will mug or assault her in some way, frightened by them and unable to understand what they are saying (they're speaking Spanish). Two women pull up in van from the Church of Gibborim and tase the men, offering her a place to say. But the men are revealed to have ben trying to rescue her, believing she would've been safer with them than whatever is at the church.

Six months later, a once-close group of friends, Alex Wilder, Nico Minoru, Chase Stein, Gert Yorkes, Karolina Dean, and Molly Hernandez have grown apart following the death of Nico's sister Amy which took place two years ago. Alex is the most determined to try to get the group back together but they are more reluctant to do so. Gert is interested in Chase and offers to tutor him in Spanish, as he feels pressure to do better from his overbearing father. Nico and Karolina encounter one another in the bathroom and encourage each other as they are both saddened. Nico is still dealing with the loss of her sister and Karolina feels ostracised due to her mother being a prominent figure in the Church of Gibborim.

Karolina is giving a testimony about the church to some reporters when she meets Destiny, who now has a more wholesome appearance and claims to be grateful for how the church has improved her life. Karolina is eager to talk to Destiny and hear about what it was like to rebel. Meanwhile, Gert's adopted younger sister Molly discovers she has developed super strength that she struggles to be able to control and causes her eyes to glow when she uses her powers.

Alex returns home disappointed. All of their parents are having a meeting for the group Pride that they are all in. Alex had been given a supply of pizza and games for his friends to all have their own party but resumes playing his video game. Meanwhile, Chase arrives at a party that Karolina shows up to as an act of finally rebelling. She is given a pill by a stranger and removes her Church of Gibborim bracelet which results in her hands and arms beginning to glow before passing out. Some random boys pick her up and bring her upstairs intent on taking advantage of her but Chase spots them bringing her upstairs and follows afterward to stop them. He rescues Karolina and fights off her two would-be rapists who leave injured. He puts her belt back on as well as her bracelet which leads to her waking up. He helps her out of the party and she says she doesn't want to go home or back to the party.

Molly goes to feed Gert's pets but discovers that their parents have a strange and frightening creature in the basement. She calls Gert to ask for help and she sets out to pick her up, as Molly doesn't want to be home.

Nico is on the beach performing a Wiccan ritual hoping to be able to contact the spirit of her dead sister Amy but it doesn't work.

Alex texts out a photo of the group to everyone, prompting them all to come over and find refuge with their once-close friends. The group dynamic is awkward to start off with, despite Alex's best efforts to bring everyone close again. Chase wants to leave and lashes out at Alex for not coming to the funeral. Gert guilt-trips Chase for not showing up to their study session. They all vent their frustrations and unresolved grief at losing their friend. Karolina says she is sick of pretending to be fine and declares that they need to talk things through. Chase only agrees to do so if alcohol is involved so he sets off towards the house to find some of Alex's parent's supply. The group heads towards the house and finds their parents are no longer in the room they were in but their bags are still there. Chase serves Gert a drink and apologises to her for not showing up to their study session and she turns him down when he asks if they can reschedule one.

Alex accidentally uncovers a secret passage and the group heads down, only to discover all of their parents sacrificing Destiny in a strange ritual that sends her body through a large beam of light. There is a strange sort of barrier surrounding what they're doing that allows the teenagers to speak without the adults hearing them. Molly tries to snap a photo of what's happening and the flash alerts the adults, prompting the teenagers to run away.
