All the DC fans that have been clamouring for new DC content can rejoice! Not only is "Joker" getting rave reviews from the film festival circuit, the "Suicide Squad" spin-off "Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn)" is officially kick-starting it's promotional campaign.

Margot Robbie has been at the forefront of driving this project creatively since she first began working as Harley Quinn in the Oscar-winning DCEU film "Suicide Squad" (2016). It was her insistence that played a key role in components such as the film having a woman director (Cathy Yan will be the second woman to direct a film in the DCEU and the first Asian woman to do so), the film being another ensemble piece in which Harley has friends instead of traversing her journey all alone, and likely other creative aspects that we the audience have yet to learn about since we haven't seen it yet.

There is a teaser trailer that is being reported to only be playing in cinemas (for now) and in all likelihood will be heavily pushed in the trailers before "IT: Chapter Two" (another WB release that is only a week away from it's release). However, as the Internet is a virtually unstoppable force nowadays, that trailer has already leaked online and began to make it's rounds. In it, Harley wields her giant mallet that was teased as an Easter Egg in "Suicide Squad" and multiple other characters (both 'heroes' and villains) are teased in the shots that are cut together in rapid succession. Get ready, folks! Another DCEU hit is on the way!

Guy Ritchie's upcoming film "The Gentlemen" (distributed by STXfilms) has finally announced a release date. On January 24, 2020, fans will be treated to a return to form for Ritchie after his detour into Disney-land with the live-action "Aladdin", which marked Ritchie's biggest box office success to date after it crossed the $1 billion mark.

Ritchie's first rise to prominence was in the realm of London gangster films before he began to challenge himself creatively by adapting larger name projects such as Sherlock Holmes, The Man from U.N.C.L.E., and King Arthur. Through it all, Ritchie has maintained a strong focus on his characters and the bonds between them which has won over an underground but passionate fanbase for his work. With a star-studded cast in "The Gentlemen" including Charlie Hunnam, Henry Golding, Colin Farrelly, Hugh Grant, and Matthew McConaughey, the new year will be starting off on the right foot!

If decades past were golden for the cheesy fun of low-budget B-movie monster films, "Crawl" is the more polished modern take with a more gritty delivery. Kaya Scodelario plays the protagonist, Haley, and gives a tremendous performance that demands a significant amount of energy and focus as much of her action is done without dialogue. The swimming background is an important piece of context that is introduced right at the beginning and makes perfect sense given the film's premise of having to battle giant alligators.

Director Alexandre Aja is consistent in his work being in the horror genre. My personal favourite is the film "Horns" (starring Daniel Radcliffe) but what was particularly great about him doing this new film is that he had the rare gift of being able to have his complete vision released to the public without any producer/studio cuts or interference. It's a simple, straight-forward concept but there's still some deeper poetry to Haley's character journey throughout the film as she fights to survive the elements and the creatures that come after her (the alligators have risen to the level of human homes because of a hurricane). Though there are a few more jump scares than what I typically like to experience in a film, the overall pacing is well-organised as the tension builds up towards the bigger scares. Any horror fan should enjoy this summer contribution to the genre.

"I Still Believe" is an upcoming Christian biographical drama film about singer-songwriter Jeremy Camp and his first wife, Melissa Lynn Henning-Camp, who died of ovarian cancer shortly after they married. Camp wrote a song "I Still Believe" after her death, and this is what the film's title is based on. The film will be released on March 20, 2020 by Lionsgate, and stars Riverdale actor KJ Apa as Jeremy Camp.

"Stuber" is a refreshing addition to this year's roster of action films. When Vic, portrayed by Dave Bautista, gets eye surgery he calls an Uber to chauffeur him around as he pursues leads on a case he has a personal investment in solving. Stu, portrayed by Kumail Nanjiani, is that Uber driver. To say that hi-jinks ensue would be an understatement.

Nanjiani has already established himself in both stand-up comedy and comedic acting, and Bautista's background is full of action, this dynamic on-screen works very well. They are given the opportunity both as actors and characters to bring the other into their respective worlds. They're genuinely funny with one another and effectively display that they are capable of more than what they were previously known for.

Regardless of the modest budget, the film executes action well. This appears to be due in large part to a strong set of stunt actors and coordination, as well as the enthusiasm of the lead actors in these particular sequences. The comedy is also well done, and it's made all the better by the genuine chemistry between Nanjiani and Bautista who very clearly convey their enjoyment in getting to work with one another. The comedic writing embraces plenty of self-awareness and meta humour regarding the action genre and the tropes that exist within that genre. The old-fashioned approach to male-led action films is often centered around muscle-bound characters with no convincing emotional depth or interesting character arcs. "Stuber" has more depth than you might expect it to. It offers an entirely respectable amount of character development in the emotional journey for both Stu and Vic. It's a breath of fresh air that is just what the genre needs.
