DOROTHY'S JOURNEY TO FIND HER MOTHER LEADS HER TO A NEW AND MAGICAL WORLD - FLORENCE KASUMBA, ISABEL LUCAS AND FIONA SHAW GUEST STAR -

While searching for her mother, Dorothy Gale (Adria Arjona) is swept up into the eye of a tornado and transported to a mystical world where an all-powerful ruler (Vincent D'Onofrio) governs over one kingdom, has outlawed magic and faces not only the wrath of a growing cauldron of witches but a looming disaster brought on by a mythical force.

Semi-final 4 of Melodifestivalen 2017 is one of the hottest topics of discussion among both domestic and international viewers of the contest. The main point of focus is Loreen's return to the contest, as she is most famously known for winning the contest in 2012 and going on to win Eurovision with the song "Euphoria". Loreen's return may have spun some into a frenzy at the possibility of her winning once again but the more pertinent point to remember is that with this effort, consumers can expect to get a new album that's been waited for, for over four years. With so much time away from releasing a fully developed product such as this, the pressure is enormously high for Loreen though competition is seemingly not high on her list of priorities. Loreen has always been more focused on the artistic integrity of her work than the numbers they produce.

Also returning to the contest in semi-final 4 is Northern darling Jon Henrik Fjällgren, who finished as runner-up to Måns Zelmerlöw in 2015. This time, he has a featuring artist named Aninia so whether this adds or takes away from the quality of his charms is yet to be seen. Jon Henrik does a folksy, regional style of music so it may not appeal to the pop traditionalists. But considering how well he did in 2015, it would be foolish to underestimate his competitive edge.

French-Romani singer Kendji Girac is one of the biggest, hottest artists in the French music scene at the moment. Following the success of Kendji's "Ensemble" album, he is re-releasing it in a deluxe edition with new singles including his latest single "Ma Câlina" which premiered on his VEVO page with a music video compiling footage of Kendji enjoying the fruits of his labour from meeting adoring fans, performing to massive crowds, and shooting the music videos that span his career.

In semi-final 3, the competitive calibre jumps up in comparison with semi-final 2. The odds-on favourite to qualify is adolescent boy band The Fooo Conspiracy that have amassed a following of teenaged girls in regions spanning the globe. Expect to see a good deal of choreography in their performance, as it's been a large selling point in their brand since the band's conception. Originally a foursome, The Fooo Conspiracy will be competing as a threesome after one of the members left the group. With some slight adjustments on formations, the transition shouldn't be too difficult.

The other favourite to qualify direct is Robin Bengtsson, who was one of the breakout stars of Melodifestivalen 2016 with his entry, "Constellation Prize." Robin has promised his new song will be more sexy and up-tempo than his previous entry, and it was also co-written by previous Melodifestivalen winner Robin Stjernberg who is a friend and co-label-mate of his. Capitol doesn't have the most competitive reputation as far as staging goes but given Robin's success last year, hopefully this year will up the calibre of staging. Also if Robin ups his energy to match the song, he's bound to improve on the overall performance quality.

Egor Kreed has released a new single that bodes promising for his new album - whenever he gets around to releasing it, that is. "Мало так мало" is a fun, Latin-infused pop track with the urban sprinklings that are typically found in a Egor Kreed release. Despite his start as a "rapper" it's only been as a pop artist that Egor Kreed has found his footing with a highly commercial sound that is highly accessible to international audiences, even when all of the lyrics are in Russian.

The music video spins a tale of Egor discovering Eris, the goddess of Chaos, and unleashing her on the world or perhaps it's simply Moscow that is falling prey to her antics. There's some quality imagery and colour schemes (consistent with the Eastern European pop industry), but some questionable ones too that needlessly exploit women (consistent with the Black Star label's tendencies).

Full disclosure here: semi-final 2 is the least competitive semi-final of Melodifestivalen 2017. The two clear front-runners (based on their past catalogue, hype, name recognition, and the way the voting app swayed the results, in 2016, favourably towards youth and contemporary pop) are Lisa Ajax and Benjamin Ingrosso. Though Oscar Zia's invented-loud backing track and incessantly choppy camera work plus SVT's sabotage of Lisa in the running order swayed things towards the former in the finals, it is important to remember that Lisa won her semi-final when up against Oscar in 2016. She's also a consistently strong artist in the calibre of her releases and getting content out in a timely manner. Benjamin Ingrosso has all the makings of a Dark Horse in this semi-final, and perhaps even in the overall contest. There's great potential in his past releases, "Crystal Clear" in particular, and he's also from the same label as Zara Larsson. Smells like we can dare to hope for some expensive staging with this entry...

With Melodifestivalen 2017 drawing nearer, the speculations are flaming hot as to who will qualify from the four semi-finals and even more so who could win the whole contest. Among a line-up full of large, competitive names, semi-final one is undoubtedly the overall strongest of the bunch. Similarly to last year's strong start (which also kicked off in Göteborg), another bloodbath is about to commence.

Ace Wilder: In her third Melodifestivalen attempt, Ace is returning with a "Love It Or Hate It" entry that she co-wrote with "Stupid" collaborators Peter Böstrom and Thomas G:son. Ace always delivers a strong performance with an original staging concept so the odds are high that she will deliver another edgy pop banger - regardless of whether Sweden finds it palatable.

De Vet Du: Swedish internet-phenomenon De Vet Du have a highly original concept of fusing commercial, catchy club pop with comedic concepts. It's unclear what method they will take in transferring the narratives created in their numerous music videos (yes, that's right, a Swedish act that has actually consistently released music videos) to a live Melodifestivalen stage but they'll be tough to beat, both in this semi-final and on the Spotify charts once their song gets released.

Dinah Nah: After being robbed of her returning spot in Melodifestivalen 2016, Dinah 'Queenah' Nah is returning to the contest with a song she has co-written with her close professional associate Dr. Alban [who also co-wrote "Make Me (La La La)"]. With an upgraded label and the promise of a new pop-banger, hopefully Dinah will deliver one hell of a show-stopper that will impress Swedes enough to get her one of the four qualifying spots.

Boris René: After following up a respectable Melodifestivalen/Swedpop debut with an even more impressive single, "Mon Amour," Boris is returning to the contest with the same song-writers behind both "Put Your Love On Me" and "Mon Amour" but after being a surprise Andra-Chansen-To-Finals hit, hopefully Warner Music Sweden will up the budget on his staging to increase his competitive odds.
