Synopsis

My Review

I have watched it twice. My thoughts about it is sill the same. I loved it! I have read the book and the other books in the series, and it is definitely a great read. Cassandra Clare has a knack for creating worlds with such great detail and well developed characters. So, yah, when news of a movie based on the book got out, I got excited! However, like so many failed attempts to adapt a novel to film, it can be a huge disappointment, especially for those that have read the books and are loyal fans to the author.  There has been very few successful novel to film adaptations, that I have learned to not compare the film to the book too much. There will always be changes, but how much change is what can make or break the film.

 

In regards to The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones, I thought the cast and crew were successful in capturing the heart and essence of Cassandra Clare's novel. The casting was perfect, as in that Lily Collins did embody "Clary Fray," Jamie Campbell Bower IS "Jace Wayland," Robert Sheehan IS "Simon Lewis" and so on and so forth. I enjoyed the fact that Lily Collins is a huge fan of the books, even before she got the part!

 

Although there were changes, the film still maintained the storyline. The movie was filled with drama, suspense and action...yup, there was definitely some "badassery" by our female cast! I know it's not one of those that would get Oscar "nods," but it does successfully keep within the expectations of the many fans of the book(s).

 

However, like any film adaptations, there were changes. Yes, there were changes, but I thought these changes were negligible since it made sense in the movie. Moreover, there were minute changes that did not go well with me. For instance, the greenhouse scene, I loved the scene, but I felt it to be "cliché-ish" & "cheesy" when that Demi Lovato song played in the background. I think it would of worked better if it was just the instrumental/score of the song...but, that's just me. For instance, it seemed to me that Godfrey Gao's, who played Magnus Bane, voice was dubbed! Really!!! I heard him speak in a video in which he was speaking....AND, he spoke well - in English! Magnus just didn't seem real enough for me, because of the dub of his voice. C'mon! He's supposed to be exotic! In addition to that, Magnus didn't seem flamboyant enough on screen.

 

Overall, I loved the movie. The cast had "chemistry" and the direction was beautiful! Jessica Postigo Paquette did an amazing job with the screenplay! She maintained that essence of the story while compressing it into a 130 minute movie. Although critics (who haven't read the book ) gave The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones bad reviews, I think the fans of the books would be more harsher in criticizing the movie. And, as far as I know, every fan that have watched it, loved it...including me and my daughter! I have learned to NOT listen or read any of those "critics." 

 

A reminder...it is NOT Twilight! Many critics are comparing all these YA novel to film adaptations to the Twilight phenomenon; hence, it doesn't give these other films a FAIR chance. I am also a fan of the Twilight series by Stephenie Meyer, I'm not obsessed, but I did enjoy the books.

ATLAS ENTERTAINMENT, PRODUCER OF THE ORIGINAL THEATRICAL FILM, WILL PRODUCE THE SERIES WITH UNIVERSAL CABLE PRODUCTIONS PRODUCTION SCHEDULED TO BEGIN IN NOVEMBER

NEW YORK – August 26, 2013 – Syfy is greenlighting 12 Monkeys, a drama series based on the 1995 Universal Pictures film directed by Terry Gilliam, to pilot.  The 60-minute cast-contingent pilot is being produced by Universal Cable Productions and Atlas Entertainment, producer of the original Bruce Willis-Brad Pitt theatrical. 

Based on the classic hit film, 12 Monkeys follows the journey of a time traveler from the post-apocalyptic future who appears in present day on a mission to locate and eradicate the source of a deadly plague that will eventually decimate the human race. 

Production is set to begin in November with Terry Matalas & Travis Fickett (Terra Nova, Nikita), who wrote the pilot script, serving as Co-Executive Producers. Atlas Entertainment’s Charles Roven (American Hustle, Man of Steel, The Dark Knight Trilogy) and Richard Suckle (American Hustle, The International), will Executive Produce. Roven produced the original film.

NEW YORK – August 22, 2013 – Syfy announces additional casting for its upcoming drama pilot, High Moon, inking Peter Macon, Dana Davis and Jonathan Tucker for recurring roles in the 90-minute pilot.  Charity Wakefield also signs on for a pilot guest starring role.  Co-produced by Universal Cable Productions and Lark Productions, the pilot is set to commence shooting August 26 in Vancouver BC. The project is based on the novel “The Lotus Caves” by John Christopher.

High Moon is an imaginative, out-of-this-world adventure series exploring what happens when Earth establishes colonies to mine the Moon’s resources and discover a new form of life. Chaos erupts in a genuinely emotional, humorously thrilling and always unexpected fashion as the colonists of the Moon race to uncover this life form’s powerful secrets.

High Moon is executive produced by Bryan Fuller (Hannibal) and Adam Kane (Being Human), Cary Granat and Steve Granat for Reel FX, Don Murphy and Susan Montford for Angry Films, and Louise Clark and Andrew Williamson for Lark Productions.  Adam Kane will also direct the pilot written by Co-executive Producer Jim Danger Gray (Pushing Daisies) from the story adaptation written by Fuller and Gray.

Peter Macon will portray General Gale Lynn Winehart, a hard-as-nails American Army General able to kick the crap out of just about anybody.  Possessing years of battle experience, he is not only savvy but cautious as he knows things are not always what they seem. He is intent on getting to the bottom of the explosion on the moon. 

Macon narrated HBO’s Animated Tales of the World, earning a 2002 Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Voice-Over Performance.  He has appeared in episodes of Nash Bridges, Law & Order, Without a Trace, Supernatural and Dexter. 

Dana Davis will portray the cute, rugged, direct and charming Yama Winehart, daughter of General Winehart.  She is also the first -- and last -- kid ever born on the moon.  Pre-natal problems with artificial gravity mean she can never leave the moon, giving her a special connection with it and making her the moon’s first environmentalist.

Davis played Chasity Church on the ABC Family series 10 Thinks I Hate About You and Carmen Phillips on the TNT series Franklin & Bash.  She also co-starred in NBC’s Heroes as Monica Dawson.  Born in Davenport, Iowa, Davis is a skilled violinist and holds a degree in music from Loyola Marymount University. 

Jonathan Tucker will portray Stanslav “Stan” Stavin, a handsome and outgoing miner for the Russians. But there is more than meets the eye when it comes to this man. 

Originally from Boston, MA, Tucker is known for his roles in films The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Hostage, In the Valley of Elah and The Ruins, as well as the NBC series The Black Donnellys. He also portrayed emerging artist Patrick Angus in the 2009 film An Englishman in New York opposite John Hurt. 

Charity Wakefield also signs on to the pilot for a guest starring role, portraying the smart and savvy Eve St. John-Smythe.  Eve is British and has a rakish confidence that comes from being unfathomably rich.  She is CEO of the world’s most profitable corporation and is responsible for opening up the moon by providing oxygen to the various countries there. This vision speaks to her fair-mindedness, but controlling who breathes and for what price is also a spigot the cunning businesswoman is happy to adjust to get what she wants.  Her political posturing comes from her idealism, and ultimately what she wants is to make good on her family mission to make the moon accessible to everyone on earth.

Born in Sussex, England, Wakefield starred in the BBC1 productions of Rapunzel and Casualty 1907.  She has extensive theater credits on the British stage including Constance in The Three Musketeers at the Bristol Old Vic, Elaine in The Graduate at the New Vic, and Susan in Baby with the Bathwater at the Old Red Lion Theatre.  In 2008 she toured in a revival of W. Somerset Maugham’s The Circle at the Chichester Festival Theatre.

Leading the cast will be Chris Diamantopoulos (The Office) and Jake Sandvig (Easy A).  Diamantopoulos plays Ian, a chief investigator for the American federal government who is dispatched to the moon to figure out the causes of an explosion. Sandvig plays his brother Marty, a felon being investigated for engaging in possible espionage and sabotage when the giant blast goes off near an area where he was working on the moon.

UNIVERSAL CITY, Calif. — August 23, 2013 — Acclaimed British actor Stephen Moyer has been added to the cast of NBC’s Dec. 5 live holiday production of “The Sound of Music.”

Moyer will portray decorated World War I hero Capt. Georg Von Trapp, who is the single father of seven children. Living in Austria on the cusp of World War II, the militaristic but warm-hearted Von Trapp engages a young governess, Maria, who he hires to take care of his children.

Grammy Award winner and multi-platinum recording artist Carrie Underwood is set to star as Maria.

The three-hour production will be based on the original 1959 Broadway production of “The Sound of Music,” which starred Mary Martin and Theodore Bikel. The play won the Tony Award as best musical and Martin won as best actress.

The 1965 film version starred Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer and went on to win five Academy Awards, including best picture.

The music and lyrics for “The Sound of Music” were written by Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein, respectively.

Moyer, a graduate of the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art, is best known to U.S. audiences for his role as Bill Compton in HBO’s “True Blood.” He has appeared on the series since it began in 2008 and was nominated for a Screen Actors Guild Award as part of the show’s ensemble.

Last month he starred in the Hollywood Bowl’s production of the iconic musical “Chicago,” where he played charismatic attorney Billy Flynn.

Moyer is a stage veteran in the U.K., having spent time with the National Theatre of Wales, the Royal Shakespeare Company, the Oxford Stage Company and the Young Vic in England. He has played the lead role “Romeo and Juliet” as well as several other legit productions early in his career.

From Universal Television, “The Sound of Music” is executive produced by Neil Meron and Craig Zadan. Beth McCarthy-Miller and Rob Ashford will serve as directors.

New York, NY - August 22, 2013 - Epic Pictures Releasing has set a theatrical release date ofOctober 4th for their action adventure VIKINGDOM by Yusry A. Halim. In February of 1959 a group mysteriously disappears in the Ural Mountains of Russia leaving behind no survivors, details of what happened are scarce, mix that with a "found footage" styling and you have Devil's Pass.

A US team of documentary filmmakers travel to Russia (sounds familiar?) in search of answers to thec A very real incident where Soviet investigators determined that although two of victims suffered from fractured skulls, two from broken ribs and one was missing her tongue, that the group parished of natural causes. Likely the act of an avalanche, except for the whole tongue thing and radioactive clothing, it has caused any number of theories to surface.

The group is led by the overly perky, Holly, who's sole purpose is to keep everyone on track as they track down the truth. Which proves to be a tough nut to crack, with the tightlipped locals. The film although slow to start picks up the pace as the crew begins hiking, and thats when things get truly weird.

On the “Mountain of the Dead,” they’re faced with plenty of unexplained incidents from footprints mysteriously appearing in the snow to GPS navigation devices failing to work. It quickly spirals out of control by the time the surviving group has to retreat to a mysterious cave for the final act of the movie.

The premise of Devil’s Pass is completely provocative though it never quite lives up to its hype. Rather than delivering scares, its merely suspenseful. “Devil’s Pass” is, in many ways, an upgraded “Blair Witch Project.” But rather than capitalizing on that fear that "Blair Witch Project" captured with its simple story, "Devil's Pass" nixes the shaky camera work, and gives a rather complicated back story that draws the suspense out far too long.

Is it entertaining? Sure, but the dialogue is utterly groan-worthy, and I felt that I was laughing more at the movie rather that with it.  Director Renny Harlin (Die Hard 2) would have been better off telling the story of the actual “Dyatlov Pass Incident” rather than to delve into the found footage craze.

NEW YORK – August 22, 2013 – Syfy announces additional casting for its upcoming drama pilot, High Moon, inking Peter Macon, Dana Davis and Jonathan Tucker for recurring roles in the 90-minute pilot.  Charity Wakefield also signs on for a pilot guest starring role.  Co-produced by Universal Cable Productions and Lark Productions, the pilot is set to commence shooting August 26 in Vancouver BC. The project is based on the novel “The Lotus Caves” by John Christopher.

High Moon is an imaginative, out-of-this-world adventure series exploring what happens when Earth establishes colonies to mine the Moon’s resources and discover a new form of life. Chaos erupts in a genuinely emotional, humorously thrilling and always unexpected fashion as the colonists of the Moon race to uncover this life form’s powerful secrets.

High Moon is executive produced by Bryan Fuller (Hannibal) and Adam Kane (Being Human), Cary Granat and Steve Granat for Reel FX, Don Murphy and Susan Montford for Angry Films, and Louise Clark and Andrew Williamson for Lark Productions.  Adam Kane will also direct the pilot written by Co-executive Producer Jim Danger Gray (Pushing Daisies) from the story adaptation written by Fuller and Gray.

Peter Macon will portray General Gale Lynn Winehart, a hard-as-nails American Army General able to kick the crap out of just about anybody.  Possessing years of battle experience, he is not only savvy but cautious as he knows things are not always what they seem. He is intent on getting to the bottom of the explosion on the moon.

Macon narrated HBO’s Animated Tales of the World, earning a 2002 Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Voice-Over Performance.  He has appeared in episodes of Nash Bridges, Law & Order, Without a Trace, Supernatural and Dexter.

Dana Davis will portray the cute, rugged, direct and charming Yama Winehart, daughter of General Winehart.  She is also the first -- and last -- kid ever born on the moon.  Pre-natal problems with artificial gravity mean she can never leave the moon, giving her a special connection with it and making her the moon’s first environmentalist.

Davis played Chasity Church on the ABC Family series 10 Thinks I Hate About You and Carmen Phillips on the TNT series Franklin & Bash.  She also co-starred in NBC’s Heroes as Monica Dawson.  Born in Davenport, Iowa, Davis is a skilled violinist and holds a degree in music from Loyola Marymount University.

Jonathan Tucker will portray Stanslav “Stan” Stavin, a handsome and outgoing miner for the Russians. But there is more than meets the eye when it comes to this man.

Originally from Boston, MA, Tucker is known for his roles in films The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Hostage, In the Valley of Elah and The Ruins, as well as the NBC series The Black Donnellys. He also portrayed emerging artist Patrick Angus in the 2009 film An Englishman in New York opposite John Hurt.

Charity Wakefield also signs on to the pilot for a guest starring role, portraying the smart and savvy Eve St. John-Smythe.  Eve is British and has a rakish confidence that comes from being unfathomably rich.  She is CEO of the world’s most profitable corporation and is responsible for opening up the moon by providing oxygen to the various countries there. This vision speaks to her fair-mindedness, but controlling who breathes and for what price is also a spigot the cunning businesswoman is happy to adjust to get what she wants.  Her political posturing comes from her idealism, and ultimately what she wants is to make good on her family mission to make the moon accessible to everyone on earth.

Born in Sussex, England, Wakefield starred in the BBC1 productions of Rapunzel and Casualty 1907.  She has extensive theater credits on the British stage including Constance in The Three Musketeers at the Bristol Old Vic, Elaine in The Graduate at the New Vic, and Susan in Baby with the Bathwater at the Old Red Lion Theatre.  In 2008 she toured in a revival of W. Somerset Maugham’s The Circle at the Chichester Festival Theatre.

Leading the cast will be Chris Diamantopoulos (The Office) and Jake Sandvig (Easy A).  Diamantopoulos plays Ian, a chief investigator for the American federal government who is dispatched to the moon to figure out the causes of an explosion. Sandvig plays his brother Marty, a felon being investigated for engaging in possible espionage and sabotage when the giant blast goes off near an area where he was working on the moon.
