"Banshee" Delivers Small-Town Action!

Upon being released from a 15-year prison sentence, an unnamed criminal travels to a small town named Banshee in search of his long-lost love(r) and partner-in-crime, Anastacia. Not long after his arrival, he finds himself in a scuffle and assumes the identity of Lucas Hood, who was set to be the town's new sheriff before being accidentally killed. Though he initially takes up the position as a way of more easily integrating himself into the town while continuing his pursuits of his former lady love, he quickly finds that he is well suited to the job. Given the hardening he underwent during his time in prison, he has a no-nonsense attitude that keeps him from being bought by the the town's "Big Bad": a man named Kai Proctor, who abandoned his Amish life to become a crime lord.

Lucas' approach to being a sheriff may be likened to Doctor House's approach to being a doctor. They are quick to make their own rules, which can seriously anger those that they work with... until those people see that their roguish ways yield strong results. They also have a propensity for reckless behaviour. While Dr. House's vice was Vicodin, Lucas Hood has a propensity for casual sex with strangers. (I state this as being risky since it's unclear as to whether or not he ever uses protection).

Through the assumption of this identity, "Lucas Hood" goes on a journey of redemption. By being in a small town, as well as having a ferociously fierce transvestite hacker ally, he is able to become the town's hulking badass sheriff. While Lucas Hood builds a new life for himself, Anastacia must cope with the ghosts of her past colliding with the life she has created and her new family. Lead actors Antony Starr and Ivana Miličević deliver gripping performances that get viewers invested in the stories of Lucas and Anastacia, be they separate or intertwined.

"Banshee" is jam-packed with action, though the violence is not quite so theatrical as premium fan-favourite, "Spartacus". The show has a gritty feel, similar to the Statham-led "Death Race," but with more substance. The show airs on Cinemax, so it's of little surprise to those familiar with that network's reputation that the show has an abundance of sexually explicit content. "Banshee" was co-created by Jonathan Tropper and David Schickler, and co-produced by Alan Ball ("True Blood," "Six Feet Under," "American Beauty") and Greg Yaitanes ("House," "Lost," "Prison Break"). If you are a fan of premium channel shows (the ones that don't censor to the same extent as basic cable), then now is the time to give "Banshee" your undivided attention. Season 2 will being airing on January 10, 2014!

"Banshee" airs on Cinemax, beginning Friday, January 10 at 10/9 c.

Atlantis S1E13 - "Touched by the Gods: Part Two" Recap

The Brazen Bull is being prepared for Ariadne's execution. She will be placed inside the metal bull, a fire will be lit beneath it, the metal will be heated, she will roast inside, and her screams will be amplified by the acoustics of the bull. Jason is horrified by it and is extremely guilt-ridden. He wants to go confess his crimes but Pythagoras warns him that Ariadne is all that stands between Pasiphae and the throne, so she will never spare Ariadne's life. Jason doesn't want to let Ariadne die alone and Hercules berates him for being so willing to throw his life away. He tells him he is fond of him and that they will either stop the execution or die trying. He refuses to have themselves be killed unless they die fighting. Jason questions Hercules on his being fond of him, saying he's never even admitted to liking him, and Hercules humourously retorts that he's marginally less fond of him than he is of Pythagoras and that he's less fond of Pythagoras than wine and pies. Pythagoras cheerfully proclaims that this is probably the nicest thing Hercules has ever said to him.

Ariadne is visited by a temple priest in her prison cell. She is scared and regrets blames herself for all the suffering Pasiphae will inflict on the people once she is ruler. He tells her to not lose faith and that they should pray to the gods. She asks him to tend to her father and make his final days as comfortable as can be. He promises to do all that he can.

The Oracle warns Pasiphae while she is praying at the temple that the gods will not forgive her for putting Ariadne to death, as killing her is a violation of the most sacred laws. Pasiphae insists that she is fulfilling her duties while the King is ill and the Oracle notes that the swiftness with which the King has fallen ill has taken all by surprise. Pasiphae warns her it would be unwise to try to stop her but the Oracles says that it is not she who will stop Pasiphae. She says that Pasiphae's nemesis draws near and Pasiphae says that her riddles do not scare her. The Oracle says that like Pasiphae, her nemesis is touched by the Gods. She warns that it won't be so easy to kill this person. Pasiphae questions who this person is and the Oracle replies that she'll find out soon enough.

The trio are visited by the Head Guard of the palace who offers up his help to rescue Ariadne. He says that he serves the King. Jason visits the Oracle and says he'll rescue Ariadne or die trying. She is proud of how he now chooses his own path instead of relying on her for guidance. He thanks her for all she has done for him and she says that he was the answer to their prayers. She tells him to go to the silver mines in Pangean and says that perhaps they'll not think to look for him among the dead. Strange, cryptic message. Typical Oracle.

Ariadne's execution draws near and Hercules feigns drunk to get near the bull and spill more flammable liquor in a trail that leads from it through the crowd. Jason shoots a flaming arrow and a fire rages that sends the crowd into a frenzy. In the commotion, the guard conspiring with the trio takes Ariadne and sends her off to meet her friends. The guard eventually catches back up to the trio and Ariadne and is now injured. They escape through underground tunnels and the guard stay behind to fight off the pursuing party while the others continue on their escape. In the end, Heptarian is the one to kill him.

The trio escapes into the forest and Ariadne changes into more simple clothing before burning the gown she was originally wearing. She tells Jason that she fears she may never return to Atlantis. He reminds her of the time she said she wished for a simple life and perhaps this is her chance at it. The group heads for the mines as recommended by the Oracle while Pasiphae, Heptarian, and guards hunt them.

Back at the palace, Ariadne's traitorous servant poisons the King on the Queen's behalf and the priest witnesses this in secret. He relays the news to the Oracle, who insists that they must save him. The priest reveals to the viewers that the Oracle has always said that he never had a right to the throne and the Oracle states that he is the lesser of two evils when compared to Pasiphae. She also says that Jason will be safe in the mines because, "Who better to protect him than his own father?" What.

The group arrives at the mines and are met by a hooded group of lepers, led by a man named Tychon. Jason tells Tychon that he was sent there by the Oracle to escape Pasiphae and the man questions Jason on his name after seeing his necklace. Tychon allows them to stay. Tychon recognises that Ariadne is the princess of Atlantis and Jason tells him that she had been sentenced to death. Tychon comments that Minos would never allow such a thing and Jason relays the news of his falling ill and Pasiphae seeking to claim the throne. Tychon notes the dangers of desiring power. Jason asks him how long he has had his disease and Tychon says it's been many years and he's almost forgotten what it was like before having it. He also notices that Jason has feelings for Ariadne.

The priest visits the King as the treacherous servant is poisoning him yet again. When he says he must pray with the King, she says the Queen had ordered her to stay by his side at all times but he tells her that royal death rights are a sacred ritual and questions her as to whether she would dare defy the gods. After she leaves, the priest drops a vial of some healing remedy into King Minos' mouth.

The search party has tracked the group to the silver mines and Pasiphae orders that Ariadne be taken alive so she may be executed in front of her people, and orders that the others be killed. One leper spots them and warns the others of the impending threat. The soldiers come storming into the cave but the others manage to get away. Heptarian is stabbed in the initial invasion. Tychon stays behind to fight alongside his people and Jason feels guilty leaving him but continues running with the group.

Pasiphae and some soldiers spot Jason and Ariadne in the forest and Jason tells Ariadne to run while he fights off some soldiers. At one point, a soldier catches up to Ariadne when she trips and falls but she feigns hurt and stabsh im when he helps her up. She is caught shortly thereafter and Jason is knocked to the ground with a blow to the head when distracted by the sound of her screaming for him. Pasiphae sends the soldiers after Ariadne and prepares to kill Jason herself while he is still passed out on the ground. Tychon catches up to her and stops her, saying that though she doesn't recognise him, she is the one who made him this way. She then recognises him and calls him by a different name. He tells her that she has the girl, which is what she came for, and to leave Jason alive. When she questions him as to why Jason is of importance to him, he drops the ultimate series-finale-bomb: "He is our son." She looks upon him amazed as Tychon says that Jason is touched by the gods as she is. She says that she had believed him to be dead. Tychon says that when Pasiphae betrayed him and usurped the throne with Minos, he had taken Jason somewhere safe where she would never find him. She asks Tychon if Jason knows of his own identity and whether she is his mother. Tychon says he doesn't and she asks why he didn't tell him. Tychon replies that he doesn't want Jason to be corrupted by this quest for power and that he doesn't believe Pasiphae can kill her own son. She tells him to promise that he will never tell Jason of the truth and he does so. Pasiphae leaves and Tychon wakes Jason, helping him to walk through the forest, during which Pythagoras and Hercules catch up to them. Unbeknownst to them, Heptarian is following them.

Jason wakes later that night and asks where Ariadne leaves. He wants to go after her but Tychon tells him he'll be of no use to her if he cannot lift a sword. Pythagoras seeks out some herbs to pack Jason's wounds while Jason rests. Tychon later tries to convince Jason to not return to Atlantis but Jason refuses to carry on without trying to save Ariadne. Tychon tells JAson that there was a time that he was like him but before he can continue the story, Heptarian springs out and attacks Jason. They fight with their swords and combat and eventually, Jason manages to get the upper hand and kill Heptarian.

The following morning, Jason parts ways with Tychon, who tells him he should be proud of the man he has become. Ariadne and Pasiphae return to Atlantis, and Minos comes out right as Pasiphae is telling the guards to take Ariadne to the cells. Pasiphae is shocked to see him seemingly recovered and Minos is furious to learn that Pasiphae would sentence his daughter to death. Pasiphae tries to say that she has been tried in accordance with the laws and that his judgement is clouded by his illness but Minos will have none of it. He insists that Ariadne be released and berates the guards when they hesitate. Ariadne hugs her father and Pasiphae is less than pleased.

The trio reach Atlantis and prepare to head to the palace but are met by the priest, Melas, who delivers a note to Jason from Ariadne. Upon reaching the palace, King Minos thanks Jason for saving his daughter and attempts to give Jason a reward for his bravery but when Jason refuses, saying that her safety is reward enough, Minos politely but firmly tells Jason to forget whatever feelings he has for Ariadne - as she is of royal blood and nothing can ever happen between the two of them.

Pasiphae visits the Oracle and questions her about Jason and his future. The Oracle tells her she should be more concerned with her own future and that the day will come when Jason will destroy her.

Pythagoras and Hercules are annoyed to know that Jason turned down a pouch of gold and the trio engage in their signature banter while Pasiphae spies on Jason in secret.

Atlantis will return in Series 2.

Atlantis S1E12 - "Touched by the Gods: Part One" Recap

Jason is visited by Circe in a dream and she reminds him of the oath he swore to kill Pasiphae. The nightmare ends with him finding Hercules dead. Jason feels he has no choice and with the help of Pythagoras and Hercules, begins plotting his breaking into the palace to kill the queen. Pythagoras has developed a way to use seaweed as a sedative. Pasiphae continues to plot the king's death and Heptarian's marriage to Ariadne as part of her rise to the throne.

The trio sneaks into the palace and knock out some guards using Pythagoras' seaweed sedative. Jason must go alone into the main part and when he reaches Pasiphae's bedroom, he cannot bring himself to kill her. She wakes and sees that there is an intruder in the dark and shouts for the guards. Jason ends up shot with an arrow by one of the guards but is able to stay hidden by hiding in Ariadne's room. The queen demands that the hunt continue but wonders why the intruder didn't kill her when they had the chance.

Heptarian visits Ariadne with guards and alerts her of the intruder and the attempt on Pasiphae's life. After he leaves, Ariadne questions Jason on why he tried to kill Pasiphae and he says that it was either that or see his friends die. Meanwhile, Pythagoras and Hercules are able to escape through the rubbish shoot.

Ariadne tends to Jason's wound and patches him up. She questions him as to why Pasiphae is still alive and he says that something stopped him when he tried to kill her. He could not bring himself to do it. Ariadne confesses that she has thought about killing Pasiphae for all she has done. Jason asks why she hasn't done it and Ariadne says that taking a life is not an easy thing to do, though Pasiphe wouldn't think twice about killing them if the tables were turned. Jason attempts to leave, not wanting to put Ariadne's life in danger, but she refuses to let him leave till dawn when she will sneak him out. She says that she will risk her life for him as he done numerous times for her. Back home, Pythagoras and Hercules are in a panic since Jason has not returned. They must sit and wait till he either returns or they hear news of his capture.

Ariadne watches Jason sleep and when he wakes, he begins to dress. Ariadne confesses that despite the perks of being born royal, sometimes she wishes she'd been born the daughter of a smith or carpenter so she'd be free to meet a simple boy of her own choosing. Jason questions as to whether she's calling him simple (stupid) and when she becomes apologetic, he smiles, showing he's only teasing her. Ariadne says that she has said too much and Jason replies that he likes listening to her and that he enjoyed the last night more than any other of his time in Atlantis. Ariadne tells him that when she's with him, all feels right with the world. Ariadne sneaks Jason through the palace and leads him to a secret passageway that leads to the temple. Jason thanks her and promises that he won't let any harm come to her. They share a kiss before he leaves.

Pasiphae wants to know how the intruder could have escaped when every exit was sealed. She demands the guards to search the palace yet again and question every servant. Jason returns home to find Pythagoras and Hercules asleep at the table. He confesses that he couldn't kill Pasiphae and apologises for failing them. They only have one day till Circe will seek her vengeance. Back at the palace, Pasiphae and the guards determine the escape route of the intruder and narrow down their pool of suspects since only members of the royal court are aware of the passageway.

The following morning, Pythagoras wakes and finds Jason gone. He wakes Hercules and realises that Jason sedated them so he can face Circe alone. They decide to go after him. Ariadne visits her sleeping father and tearfully pleads for him to get better. Pasiphae walks in and tells Ariadne that she cried for days when her own father passed. As Ariadne leaves, Pasiphae tells her that they have figured out how the intruder escaped and questions her as to whether or not she told anyone about the passageway. Ariadne denies it and leaves. The king wakes and asks whether or not Ariadne was just there, and Pasiphae lies, saying that she has not been in that day.

Jason reaches Circe and asks her to kill him and spare his friends. He attempts to attack her but she uses her witchcraft to make two extra copies of herself. Jason is able to throw a knife into the guy of the real one due to seeing her reflection in the water. As she dies, she mutters a spell and tosses some bones that sink into the dirt. Pythagoras and Hercules arrive and three skeletons rise from the ground and attack them with swords. They fight them off, at first concerned over not knowing how to kill them, but they're eventually able to smash them.

Back at the palace, one of the servants finds a bloody rag in Ariadne's room. Ariadne confesses that she sheltered the intruder and the servant insists upon taking it to burn it to keep Ariadne's secret. In actuality, she brings it to Pasiphae and tells her what she has learned. Pasiphae has Ariadne summoned to the council chamber and tries her for treason.

When Jason returns home, Hercules and Pythagoras deliver the news of Ariadne's arrest.

Pasiphae sentences Ariadne to death and Ariadne finds herself alone and without allies. No one will listen to her when she accuses the queen of coveting the throne. Ariadne refuses to hand over the name of the intruder. Pythagoras delivers the bad news of Ariadne's sentencing to Jason.

Atlantis airs on BBC One on Saturdays.

The Ultimate Life is the perfect movie to watch this Holiday Season

THE ULTIMATE LIFE just may be the perfect reminder this time of year that there’s more to life than money and material things. The flick is not only overly sweet and heartwarming, the message is such a beautiful one. It’s the sequel/prequel to the film and bestselling novel THE ULTIMATE GIFT, the book by Jim Stovall.

Jason Stevens’ world quickly begins unraveling when his greedy extended family sues him for the foundation that his grandfather Red Stevens. Not only is the foundation running him ragged, his would be fiancé Alexandra makes the decision to leave on a mission trip to Haiti. Just when he thinks he’s at his lowest, that he has nothing, he’s taken on a journey of discovery by looking to his grandfather’s old journals.

His grandfather, Red, didn’t come a billionaire family, not even a hundred-aire family. His family had nothing, and Red vowed that he would have more. Without an education, or anything else, he left home, and ended up in Texas to go big. Between odd jobs, charming the girl of his dreams, and enlisting in the army during World War II, Red never loses sight of his dream to be a billionaire.

He eventually strikes it rich, but the happiness his wealth brings is fleeting. After a nearly tragic turn of events, Red get’s a wakeup call and sees that some things are worth far more than money.

Although the movie isn't filled with big names it does have a big message, and Austin James fairly steals the heart as young Red Stevens, doing a great job of setting up a sympathetic audience for Drew Waters, as the even more determined elder Red.

THE ULTIMATE LIFE made it’s way to blu-ray and dvd on December 10th,and it may just be a perfect movie to watch with the family this time of year.  And better yet, there’s also a digital copy, perfect for those long holiday road trips.
